Negli anni Ottanta del XX secolo, questa terrazza appariva ormai come una giungla: due file di vasi delimitavano la vista in questa foto e, a sinistra, c'erano varie file di vasi che formavano passaggi e corridoi che erano un campo di giochi perfetto per noi bambini.
Nell'angolo a sinistra c'era l'uva fragolina, le ortensie erano qui vicino all'ingresso, dove c'era anche un pergolato di vite americana. Più avanti a destra la citronella e poi tante altre piante che a malapena mi ricordo.

One of the columns of the mosque, re-used for the duomo of Palermo. The book carved in the stone is, obviously, the Coran. The mosque was transformed into a cathedral when the Arabs were defeated in Palermo in 1072 a.C.
One point: while someone nowadays could be surprised, some 700-800 years ago, this proxymity of religions must have been absolutely natural, despite the crusades and the wars. Nowadays, we make a big noise for much less, like the cross in the schools or the chador for women...

One of the columns surrounding the internal court of the Duomo in Monreale. Each of them has a different relief. No doubt, here, that the arab influences were still there.
This is a very famous tile, depicting the offer of the Duomo itself to the Virgin Mary by William II.

Ragusa, in the eastern corner of Sicily, is definitely one of the best spots of the island. This is the ceiling of the Duomo. The whole area is baroque.

Noto: a fountain

Noto, as all of the cities of eastern Sicily, had been destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1693. All the cities in this area have been rebuilt from the scratch, following the style of the time, baroque. Thus, they mantain this feeling of unicity and the homogeneous look.
This is the main square fountain with a church in background.

Piazza Armerina: the Roman Villa

Just a pale depiction of the magnificent Roman Villa (Villa Romana del Casale) at Piazza Armerina. Ubelievably well preserved floor mosaics, a large part of the building still standing, and the complete structure of the villa give you an actual idea about the way they lived in this site.
