The Massachusetts State House in Boston is the seat of government for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

It was designed by Charles Bulfinch as a replacement for the Old State House. The cornerstone was laid by John Hancock. The building was completed on January 11, 1798.

Bay Bay gained its name because the area was, in fact, the "Back Bay" for Boston. In a massive project which begun in 1857, the Back Bay neighborhood was created by filling the tidewater flats of the Charles River. The filling of present-day Back Bay was completed by 1882; it reached Kenmore Square in 1890, and finished in the Fens in 1900. The project was the largest of a number of land reclamation projects, beginning in 1820, which over the course of time more than doubled the size of the original Boston peninsula. It is frequently observed that this would have been impossible under modern environmental regulations.

Back Bay's development was planned by architect Arthur Gilman with Gridley James Fox Bryant. Strict regulations produced a uniform and well-integrated architecture, consisting mostly of dignified three- and four-story residential (or once-residential) brownstones.

Ft. Ticonderoga, NY

Fort Ticonderoga liegt an einer einst strategisch wichtigen Engstelle des Lake Champlain im heutigen US-Bundesstaat New York, von der ein Durchgang zum Nordende des Lake George führt. Der Name "Ticonderoga" kommt von einem Wort aus der Sprache der Irokesen und bedeutet "Platz zwischen zwei Wassern". Es war innerhalb von 20 Jahren Schauplatz von vier Schlachten bzw. Belagerungen.

Zunächst 1755 von den Franzosen erbaut, wurde es 1759 von den Briten erobert, 1775 dann in einem Handstreich von den Amerikanern, die es aber schon 1777 wieder an die Briten verloren. Diese gaben es aber schon drei Jahre später wieder auf, da es nach der Schlacht bei Saratoga strategisch unwichtig geworden war.

Fort Ticonderoga is located on once strategically important narrows in Lake Champlain where a short traverse gives access to the north end of Lake George in the state of New York. The name "Ticonderoga" comes from an Iroquois word meaning "the land between two waters". Fort Ticonderoga was the site of four battles over the course of 20 years.

Initially build by the French in 1755, it was captured by the British in 1759. 1775 it was taken by surprise by the Americans, who lost it only two years later to the British. Three years later, it was abandoned as it became irrelevant after the Battle of Saratoga.

The Pilgrim Monument of Provincetown, Massachusetts was built between 1907 and 1910 to commemorate the first landfall of the Pilgrims in 1620 and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor.

The tower is 77 m (252 ft) tall. It was designed by Willard T. Sears after the Torre del Mangia in Siena, Italy. (Source: Wikipedia)
