Sunrise on the golfcourse, seen from my window.

There are still many households without power, but in our area damage was far less than further south in Naples. I think hurricane Charley last year had already taken out all the weaker trees, and because of Charley, almost every house in town had a new, more stable roof when Wilma hit a few days ago. It looks like we were extremely lucky, but I don't regret our evacuation at all. Everyone we talked to said staying here during the hurricane was a very scary experience.

After 6 days as evacuees we are finally back home and only found minor damage around the building. Some soffit is ripped off on the front and side of the house where Wilma's winds hit the most. Some trees are uprooted and shrubbery is blown over. Unfortunately some of the beautiful palms still standing will die, because their heart is ripped out - but other than that, everything is ok. We were very relieved, our hurricane shutters held, and everything is ok.

The drive back on the interstate was stop and go, because everybody decided to come home at the same time. But a least we were not in a hurry and nervous, because this time we didn't have to get away from the hurricane. On the road down here we only saw some bent street signs and many branches piled up along the side of the road. But it was nothing compared to hurricane Charley last year.

Our heart goes out to everybody who had hurricane damage - we were VERY lucky! Thanks to all of you for your wishes, thoughts and prayers! I feel like giving you all one giant hug!

Update on Wilma: Tonight I could reach one of our neighbors by phone. She told me there are a lot of blown over trees and shrubbery, the golf course is under water (again!), but we had never even lost power. The evacuation orders have been lifted, and tomorow we will return home.

We are still waiting to see what Wilma did to the area where we live. Most likely there is no power, but we haven't heard of any severe damage as of yet. They still have heavy winds - it's not quite over with ...

Lake City, Florida - our refuge while we wait for hurricane Wilma to pass over our home 300 miles south of here. Hopefully by tomorrow morning we know more ...
