I am back on the ship now. I was in Iceland in my last holidays and during my stay there I was reminded how bad the weather can sometimes be. In Iceland we get snow storm but here we get sandstorms :)

I have never taken photos in Raw format before and I know it is very stupid of me not to do that because taking photos in Raw is probably one of the the things I gain the most by owning a camera like mine. Dark or white birds with a lit up or a dark background can often fool the camera metering so I am sure I will get better results when I have better learned how to process these raw images.

There are so many things that can- and will go wrong when I am trying to get nice photos of these birds. When I seam to get the exposure right, which is the hardest part because of the bright sky or the dark sea, the focus is usually off. I wonder how these wild life photographers managed to get all these great photos when they were using film cameras.

Because I am leaving the ship and flying home after few days I thought it was proper to post one bird photo before I leave. I am going to Iceland to play golf and I cant tell you how much I look forward to do that. I know I will be busy so I am not sure when I will have time to upload photos to this site. I will try to use the opportunity while I am in Iceland to take some photos, so I should have something nice to post when I get back :) Have a nice time while I am gone and keep up the good work uploading nice photos :)

I know I interrupted him once in a while by being there but I was amazed to see how quickly he finished eating the bird. He was quite calm though I was there and I was able to get very close.

This beautiful falcon paid us a visit the other day. We are fishing 30 miles from shore so I am not sure what he was doing or where he was going. When I was trying to take pictures of him he flew off, but then I witnessed when he caught a small bird. I have not seen anything like that before so I ended up taking close to 150 photos.

The bird life here in Mauritania is very different between months. Some months everything is so full of birds that it is nearly impossible to take a sun bath because of bird poo.

Because of help from many Flickr members my bird has a name. Here are some of the answers I got when I asked for this birds name. "Pomarine skua" is the common name, it is also known as "Pomarine Jaeger " "Stercoraius pomarinus " is the Latin name Pale morph - some bird species come in different colors, your skua is one of the paler colored ones. Adult ... it is an adult bird, not a juvenile. The Icelandic name is Ískjói.

It always amazes me how difficult it is to get nice photos of birds. I tried for an hour with these birds flying all around me and these few photos was the best I could do.

According to on on of my contacts this Tern is similar to White-cheeked Tern but that is mainly a Middle Eastern species that we're very unlikely to see in Mauritania. His thinks it is an immature Common Tern called, Sterna hirundo. Thanks Dave :)

I was sitting so close that it was easy to fill the frame with my 80-200 lens, but I had a hard time getting the focus where it should be.

I took these photos when I walking up a hill to try to find a nice spot to take a photo of Moraine Lake in Banff national park. The hill was full of these little fellas. They seamed to be very used to people because they were very curious to see if I brought them something to eat.
