There's something special about this architecture, notice the three doors? The ones left and right lead directly to the ground (first) floor flats, spanning two windows like one seen to the left and right, couldn't imagine they have more than 10 - 12qm². The middle door is the entrance to the staircase, leading to the first (second) floor, the attic and cellar, so what appears to be three different entrances is indeed one house, hosting eight flats -- at least. Consider each flat or better room to be crammed with 8 to 12 persons.

Within all that misery there was a guy born in May 1833 you might have heard of -- well, or maybe not -- quite near to that place in midst all the dirt, poverty and misery; his name: Johannes Brahms ....

Just love this view into the workroom of a bespoke shoemaker. I guess he might be the only one in Germany. There are some in London and a few in Budapest, but elsewhere this tradition seems to have vanished.

Colonial produce.

Old fashioned grocery store specialised on "colonial produce". Once to be seen everywhere, they have gone long ago to be replaced by malls.

Below an old bridge at the Nicolaifleet, Fleet being the Lower Saxon word for dike. These ancient ships are used as party boats today.

The houses seen were built in 1701 as a residential area for the working class. These are the last remnants of what once was called corridor quarter, in German Gängeviertel. Notorious for the bad living conditions and a hatchery for epidemic diseases like the cholera which infested Hamburg at a time when it had gone extinct elsewhere in Europe, the corridors were finally destroyed in the 1930ies.

Mind you, this one is called broad corridor!
