Our guide offered very literal interpretations of the petroglyphs. He suggested this one was a warning that there are snakes in the area. Highly unlikely, I think. They would no more need to warn of snakes than warn of coyotes, heat of day or darkness of night.

There are definitely small petroglyphs on this boulder. Some hikers thought the larger, lighter pattern on the rock might be remains of an even older petroglyph.

The water is flowing from a nearby spring and the pools were dug by the Cahuilla. The only change that's been made is to add liners to help hold in the water.

The guide suggests this may have been used to count passing big horn sheep. A challenging way to keep count. Stones, sticks or marks in the dirt would be more likely ways to keep count. This is something else.
