In the past it was just a little settlement in a so-called “Jewish Iceland”. The oldest marketplace used to be here. The square became a centre of all settlement round the castle little by little. An important route led over the square to customs office Ungelt. Many interesting buildings of both historical and architectonical value surround the square. Maybe the most famous is the Old Town Hall with Astronomical Clock, Tyn Church, House At the Stone Bell, Kinsky Palace, St. Nicholas Church, House At a Minute and so forth. A statue of Jan Hus stands in the centre of the square. Its author was sculptor L. Šaloun. The square witnessed many troubled moments of Czech history; one of them was an execution of Czech nobles in 1621 after the Battle of the White Mountain. At present the square is full of noises and during Advent and before Easter also full of stands and various attractions. Sometimes there are concerts held on special occasions.

When Charles IV. started to build the New Town in Prague in 1348, he wanted to create a square that would be a dignified equivalent to the Old Town Square – the Charles Square (Karlovo namesti). This place was supposed to be the central place of the New Town. The Charles Square used to be the biggest square in Europe at that time, and it is still the largest square (4.63 ha) in Prague now.

Charles Square in Prague The square got its present name at the 19th century, before that it was called the Cattle Market for large markets selling not only cattle, but also firewood, coal or pickled herrings. In the middle of the square used to stand a wooden tower in which coronation jewels were displayed once a year. In 1393 the tower was replaced by a chapel with a small cemetery. However, the chapel was destroyed in 1784.

For a long time in the past, the square was just a muddy place. That’s why, in 1876, the square was turned into a park with two fountains and many trees around it, especially in the southern part. The park contains many statues of famous Czech people, such as Vitezslav Halek, Eliska Krasnohorksa, Karolina Svetla or Jan Evangelista Purkyne.

View of the New Town Hall Even though the park is divided into three parts by two frequented streets (Jecna, Zitna), it’s a nice place to sit and relax. However, we don’t recommend to visit the park at night. The Charles Square is surrounded by many interesting buildings, such as the New Town Hall, the Jesuit College and the Church of St Ignatius of Loyola, or the Faust House.
Since the 12th century, it was the property of the Olomouc bishopric, later archbishopric. Bruno of Schaumburg, the bishop of Olomouc, founded the Cathedral of St. Moritz with its three-nave Gothic disposition before the year 1262. After a fire in the mid-19th century, it was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style.

Another significant monument of Kroměříž is the Church of St. John the Baptist. Two Maltese crosses on two towers serve as reminders of the former Maltese building. This Baroque church was built as a part of the complex of the Piarists´ school and the college.

Year 1635 was in the name of changes - the church went under the possession of the Benedicts Order from the Emmaus Monastery who decided to build a new monastery here. They also planned a large cathedral reconstruction, but they decided to brought down the old church and built a new one instead. The construction began in 1732 and it was consecrated in 1737.
While the enormous Prague Castle complex includes many fine buildings, St. Vitus is the one that dominates the city skyline and is visible from far and wide.

St. Vitus is the spiritual symbol of the Czech state. A Gothic masterpiece, work on the cathedral was commissioned by Charles IV and began in 1344 upon the site of an earlier 10th century rotunda. In all, it took nearly six centuries to complete.

Its first builders, Matthias of Arras and later Peter Parler, built the chancel with a ring of chapels, St. Wenceslas Chapel, the Golden Portal and the lower part of the main steeple.

The final phase of construction only ended during the period 1873-1929.

As well as being the largest and most important temple in Prague, St. Vitus Cathedral also oversaw the coronations of Czech kings and queens.

In the chancel of the cathedral, in front of the high alter, is the royal mausoleum. Below this, in the crypt, there are the royal tombs. Czech kings and queens and patron saints are interred here.

St. Wenceslas Chapel is decorated with frescoes and semi-precious stones. A door in the south-western corner of the chapel leads to the Crown Chamber in which the Bohemian Coronation Jewels are stored.
