In early 1940, while still living in the USA, I gave quite a few cookery deminstrations to some of Boston's "leading ladies", who were then having some trouble with domestic staff. I believe this photograph was taken while I was demonstrating how to prepare a cheese sandwich.

Ethel Dunwoody took "a shine" to her new lodger, Max Brandysnap, the moment she clapped eyes on him, standing there on her porch in the pouring rain, looking so miserable and lost.
She thought nothing of getting up at 4 o'clock in the morning to fix his breakfast, and always packed him a delicious lunch.
However, Max was married, and sent most of his pay home to his wife in Nebraska - he had never kept it a secret from Ethel. Despite this, she secretly hoped he might one day clasp her in his arms and begin a tempestuous extra-marital relationship with her, such as she had read about in her womens' magazines.

There is something vaguely sinister about this photograph . . . hard to put one's finger on what exactly, but the man holding the rather large knife, and the two of them peering into a large pot, make me feel rather uneasy.

My good friend, the Countess Anna von Schlapdasch, had a very large staff. I did so enjoy dining there, for the cook always made sure that I had several vegetarian options to choose from. He was, incidentally, renowned for his Curried Mongoose with Pomegranate Raita, a recipe which brought him to the attention of several Berlin restaurants. Despite being wooed by them, he remained loyal to the Countess.
