The Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) was built in the early sixteenth century in the Portuguese late-Gothic style, the Manueline, to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition to India. This defensive, yet elegant construction has become one of the symbols of the city, a memorial to Portuguese power as it was during the Age of Discovery. In 1983, it was classified, together with the nearby Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (wiki).

The steam train journey along the Douro is quite unforgettable and lets you get to see the beautiful terraced vineyards that are a World Heritage Site from a different angle. This is a Henschel & Shon steam engine from 1925.

A Douro river typical boat, the "Rabelo". In the XIX and early XX centuries, the Port Wine was taken down river in these flat-bottom boats to be stored in barrels in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from Porto. Now, they only transport tourists.

The "Caldeira Velha" ("Old Boiler") is an idyllic setting with a hot (35ºC/95ºF) waterfall over an escarpment that is covered with lush plants and fern trees. The iron content of the water has stained the rocks a rusty red colour, which contrasts sharply with the intense green of the surrounding vegetation. You may enjoy an hot shower in a subtropical environment. You can also see the "fumarolas" (bubbling hot water), with its typical smell.
