GREEN HOUSE OF LAEKEN IN BRUSSELS
En 1873, l'architecte Alphonse Balat conçoit pour le Roi Léopold II un complexe de serres qui complète le Château de Laeken, réalisé en style classique. Le complexe revêt l'apparence d'une ville de verre implantée dans un paysage vallonné. Les pavillons monumentaux, les coupoles de verre, les larges galeries qui parcourent le terrain comme des rues couvertes, sont beaucoup plus qu'une anecdote sur les applications architecturales du fer et du verre ou sur les petites serres de plantes exotiques. Ce que les serres royales expriment concerne l'architecture et, plus précisément, un grand programme de construction : celui du "palais de verre idéal".

In 1873, architect Alphonse Balat designed for King Leopold II a complex of greenhouses which complement the castle of Laeken, built in the classical style. The complex has the appearance of a glass city set in an undulating landscape. The monumental pavilions, glass cupolas, wide arcades that cross the site like covered streets, are much more than an anecdote on the architectural applications of iron and glass or on little greenhouses of exotic plants. What the Royal Greenhouses express concerns architecture and, specifically, a major construction programme: the "Ideal Glass Palace".

1873 entwarf der Architekt Alphonse Balat im Auftrag von König Leopold II. einen Gewächshauskomplex, der sich an das im klassischen Stil gebaute Schloss von Laeken anlehnte. Die Gewächshäuser erhielten die Silhouette einer gläsernen Stadt inmitten einer hügeligen Parklandschaft. Die monumentalen Pavillons, die Glaskuppeln, die weitläufigen Galerien, die als überdachte Straßen das Gelände durchziehen, sind mehr als ein einfacher exotischer botanischer Garten, der die baulichen Möglichkeiten von Eisen und Glas vorzeigt. Das, was in den Königlichen Gewächshäusern zum Ausdruck kommt, betrifft die Architektur und genauer gesagt eine Art Bauprogramm, das sich als „der ideale Glaspalast" bezeichnen ließe.
