The "Bridge of Romana".
This used to be one of Siena city gates, before the new line of walls made in the 14th Century. Until the 16th Century, here, there used to be a bridge and a pit underneath. Although many years have past, the Senesi still call it "a bridge".

The column with a she-wolf is one of the three ones marking the ancient division of Siena in "thirds" ("terzi"), each one corresponding to a hill upon which the city has grown. Thi is the "San Martino" one. Another one is in Piazza Postierla (Quattro Cantoni, for the thisrd of "Città") and the third one is in Piazza Tolomei for the Camollìa third.

The Roman she-wolf is the symbol of Siena, as it has been founded as a Roman colony. Although Etruscan settlements must have been in the area from long before. The site of the Duomo was supposedly the Acropolis of the city, and it is told that the Duomo itself has been built upon a temple dedicated to Athena.
