Jalal ad-Din Rumi was born in modern-day Afghanistan on September 30, 1207 and died on December 17, 1273 in Konya, Turkey. The 13th century was a time of a spiritual flowering in the Middle East. Many famous Sufi masters emerged and most of the present-day Sufi orders were established or crystallized during that time. Rumi was one of several spiritually gifted masters of the age.
