Today several Finnish institutions celebrated their bicentellial existence. On 5th of October 1809 the then Finnish government (of the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland) convened for the first time. The Finnish judicial system also counts this as its starting date (of course the geographical entity Finland had a governing body and had a judicial system before this, but now Finland constituted a political entity of its own too).

At noon I got some shots of our controversial PM Matti Vanhanen as he led a delegation to uncover a plaque commemorating the site of the building where the first meeting was held in 1809. I used my Zorki-1 so I wasn't that quick but got some shots after beeing shooed further away by his security detail. Would have gotten better shots from the other side of the river but I didn't have a telephoto with me (nor own one in m39 mount). And of course I ran out of film while still having plenty of interesting subjects.

Here's former Finnish president (1982-94) Mauno Koivisto (born 1923) seen exiting the Cathedral of Turku after a jubilée mass. He was the first president to finally replace Urho Kekkonen as president (Kekkonen acted as president between 1956 and 1982...).

I got a better shot of Koivisto on Kodachrome though, had a 135mm mounted on my FE.

Thunder over Pallas

Shot in July from one of the two summits of Pyhätunturi (lit. 'Holy Fell'). Since Finland is rather flat and what mountains we have have eroded into fells, a sight such as this is not that common. Quite different from Norway and Sweden for example.

Our campsite was to the left in frame; a polarizer would have been snazzy.

Five fells

Five fells in one frame (Kellostapuli is actually part of Ylläs, so one could say that only four fells are shown in this image, check the note).

This and others were shot in order to measure the light for a roll of Velvia 50 (a roll that I thoroughly botched). Shot from the fell Pyhätunturi in the Pallas-Yllästunturi national park.

A point of interest is the spruce to the lower right in frame that's distorted due to exposure to wind and snow etc.

Yours truly snapping away on one of the two summits of the fell Kesänki (Äkäslompolo, Kolari municipality) in Finnish Lapland. Will look for the shot I took (B&W ISO 100 Shanghai GP3 if I recall correctly).

Läntinen Pitkäkatu 16, stairwell A to the left, stairwell B to the right (the façade is not fully symmetrical).

Taken specifically for my ipernity audience during a stroll yesterday evening :) Saturation bumped up a little and a very mild local contrast enhancement applied in post-processing. Finally, yet another experiment with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

First time I've added a border around an image that I've uploaded.
