A pipe had burst beneath the street and warm water was being diverted/pumped onto the street, at 7°C in the air it turned into steam quickly, making a nice photo opportunity.

Was going to be ambitious today and do a depth-of-field "panorama". That failed miserably however. Too much wind I suppose, too many non-static objects.

Here's some solace, a couple of "normal" shots (if you can call a wide angle shot at its closest possible focussing distance and wide open normal...).

Today several Finnish institutions celebrated their bicentellial existence. On 5th of October 1809 the then Finnish government (of the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland) convened for the first time. The Finnish judicial system also counts this as its starting date (of course the geographical entity Finland had a governing body and had a judicial system before this, but now Finland constituted a political entity of its own too).

At noon I got some shots of our controversial PM Matti Vanhanen as he led a delegation to uncover a plaque commemorating the site of the building where the first meeting was held in 1809. I used my Zorki-1 so I wasn't that quick but got some shots after beeing shooed further away by his security detail. Would have gotten better shots from the other side of the river but I didn't have a telephoto with me (nor own one in m39 mount). And of course I ran out of film while still having plenty of interesting subjects.

Here's former Finnish president (1982-94) Mauno Koivisto (born 1923) seen exiting the Cathedral of Turku after a jubilée mass. He was the first president to finally replace Urho Kekkonen as president (Kekkonen acted as president between 1956 and 1982...).

I got a better shot of Koivisto on Kodachrome though, had a 135mm mounted on my FE.

Shot at waist level (as TLR's are in a way supposed to be used) or a little lower than that.

The Kodak E200 slide film I used expired in 2007 so I got it for 2€ a roll. As it has been refrigerated I don't complain at all (in fact, I'm happy I got several rolls to capture my growing daughter and the autumn colours, would have had the latter cross-processed if the film would prove to be bad). More than anything, the entire roll show me that the acquisition of a handheld external light meter was well worth the investment.

Soviet made Zenit TTL and Helios-44M (58/2) and Fomapan 400 at f/2.8, 1/125.

A not that good result in my opinion, here I've used proper colour filters for B&W photography (one issue is that I need a stronger green and blue, the red channel is usually too strong with this setup). Should have juggled a bit more with the colours.

Wanting to finish the roll of Fomapan 400 I had loaded the F2 with so I could develop the shots from the top of the cathedral, I decided to do a filter comparison. I tried my regular Hoya filters for B&W photography with some cheap plastic colour filters off the 'Bay. These work just as well, this is the result of combining three b&w exposures shot through a red, green and blue filter. In this instance after combining the images I applied a software warming filter in order to warm the colours a bit, they were a bit cold and I didn't fancy juggling yet some more with the colour channels.

Turned out the horizon was bulging away a bit, had to crop the corners when I had corrected it.

Fomapan 400 shot on my father's borrowed F2 and pre-Ai 20mm f/4 with a deep red filter. Probably 1/125 and f/8 or f/11.

Recently I got motivated to again use my Zorki 4 rangefinder (and after getting a FED 2 for next to nothing [got a refund for the whole deal minus shipping costs after I discovered the camera was rather beat up instead of being "in excellent condition", the lens[-cap really] had fungi for example], I discovered how loose the shutter curtains can be on and came to the conclusion that the ones in my Zorki 4 were way too tight (this lead to "banding" of the shots and the infinity setting of the rangefinder getting knocked a bit out of alignment by the "AK-47"-esque slam of the shutter slam at high speeds. Now adjusted and waiting for a new roll).

This is the beer/restaurant boat Cindy which is permanently moored in the river Aura which runs through Turku. In the background the City Theatre. Note the lovely wonky highlights, the halos come from the weak anti-halation layer of the Fomapan 400 film and the Soviet Sonnar-clone being wide open at f/2, I like the vintage look. Shot handheld at 1/30 I think.

Spring sale at one of the department store chains in Finland (and it does instill crazy behaviour or attract crazy customers...).

Shot on April 4th 2009 on a roll to try out a newly acquired Agfa Isolette III (6x6 medium format folding camera with an uncoupled rangefinder fitted with a 75mm f/3.5 Solinar [Tessar clone]). Shot handheld at f/4, 1/100.

The art installation in front of the cathedral, photographed last summer (2008).

One of the two rolls of Kodachrome 64 I wanted to try out (I'm waiting to get one returned that I shot during the winter). Haven't had the time to scan all frames yet, but it feels nice to have used it while one can get it processed (fortunate that Kodak still maintain the forwarding service in Lausanne).

Taken on the beach on the westmost peninsula of the island Ruissalo just outside Turku. My thanks goes to Roomeri who showed me this part of the island.

Handheld at f/8-ish, Rodinal 1+25 for 7.5 minutes in ~20°C (not that good result).

One of the more succesful frames of a roll of Delta 400 that was stand developed (that is left to 'cook' for a bit more than 1.5 hours without interruption).

Shot on December 6, 2008 (the independence day of Finland). Some trivia: the rifle on the right is a 7.62 TKIV 85 (7.62mm precision rifle m/1985), a design which uses some parts taken from Imperial Russia-era rifles, thus making some of them well over a century old.

Shot wide open at f/3.5 or stopped down to f/4 due to overcast conditions, hand held at probably 1/125 seconds. Scanned as-is including all the dust (normally I'd crop out the edges). Then a bit of contrast adjustment via photoshop's curves command followed by a local contrast adjustment (unsharp mask, 26% at 26px). Finally a yellow-magenta (highlights-shadows) tint added.

Taken on Friday 2.1.2009 (DDMMYYYY) moments after Tree trunk and Contre-jour with ice crystals.

My first medium format shots for the year and the first attempt at shooting (expired 06/2007) Ektachrome properly (a previous roll was crossprocessed) together with a 81C warming filter.
