Située au sommet d'un piton rocheux d'origine volcanique, c'est un bijou d'architecture. On y accède au bout de 268 marches, mais l'ascension vaut vraiment le coup. Elle fut érigée au début du Xe siècle par l'évêque du Puy au retour d'un pélerinage à Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, sur le site d'un ancien temple romain dédié au dieu Mercure, elle fut inaugurée en 972. Elle possède un portail trilobé d'influence mozarabe, la façade est faite d'une mosaïque de pierres noire, grise, rouge et blanche. La façade date du XIXe siècle pour le bas et du XIIe pour le haut on peut y admirer saint Jean, la Vierge Marie, le Christ, L'archange saint Michel et saint Pierre sculptés dans la pierre au dessus du portail trilobé.

À l'intérieur on peut admirer des fresques du Xe siècle restaurées en 2004, et derrière une grille un trésor découvert lors des travaux de restauration en 1955, comprenant un christ reliquaire de l'époque carolingienne, un coffret en ivoire byzantin du XIIe siècle et un autre reliquaire du XIIIe. Les vitraux ont été remplacés lors de ces mêmes travaux. La chapelle est entourée d'un chemin de ronde qui permet une jolie vue sur la ville du Puy avec sa cathédrale Notre-Dame et sur le vieux pont à redents franchissant la Borne.
