How to determine aspect ratio and change it to 3:2

Since a lot of pictures are posted with the wrong aspect ratio, I'll make a short explanation on how to determine the current aspect ratio of a picture and changing it. As example program I use Picasa since it is really easy to use and free. But you should be able to do this with any photo-software.

When you open your picture in Picasa it'll something like this:

In the red rectangle you'll find the resolution of the picture. To determine the aspect ratio you divide the first and second number:

Resolution: 1600x1200
Calculation: 1600/1200=1.333=4/3=4:3

So in this case we have an aspect ratio of 4:3, This is often the case with pictures taken with compact cameras or DSLR's of the FourThirds system (Olympus, Panasonic).

For iFC however it is necessary to change that to 3:2. To do so you press the "Crop" Button on the left. Then it will look like this:

The nice thing about Picasa is, that it gives you a help in gaining the desired aspect ratio. Choose 10x15 on the left (15/10=1.5=3/2=3:2). Then click left somewhere in the picture and drag open a rectangle. Then you can still drag the borders of the rectangle until the right and left borders touch the borders of the picture:

Should the resizing block somewhere try to drag another border.
To get a 3:2 out of a 4:3 you only need to crop something off the top and bottom of the picture. You can move the rectangle by just clicking somewhere inside and dragging. When you're content with the cropping click on apply.

Should the result not satisfy your needs, you can always use "undo crop" or "recrop".
To check everythings correct now, again we look at the resolution: 1600x1066
Calculation: 1600/1066=1.5=3/2=3:2

Some typical 3:2 resolutions:
560x373 (this is the minimum!)
1024x682
2048x1365
4096x2730

In a last step, you save a copy and your done!

How to participate:

Post your picture in large size in this thread (Don't post it to the group pool, that is for winning pictures only). Please include a number (beginning with #1) and the title in your post.

Apart from the theme the entries have to match the following specifications:

- landscape orientation and aspect ratio close to 3:2 (at least 560x373)
- you must be the author and must have all authorizations (for
instance from models...)
- you have to publicly share the picture
- the picture has to have no frame, no visible watermarking, no copyrights mention or signature inside the picture
- Only one picture per member
- no nudity

These specifications have to be met. Otherwise your picture will be removed.

- ideally the picture must have a title
- ideally, Creative Commons licensed
- the picture must serve ipernity services and brand

These specifications should be met. Especially the last specification also might cause a removal.
You should keep these specifications in mind when voting.

When it is time for every group member to vote. You may vote for three pictures. Your first vote will receive 3 points, the second 2 and the third 1 point:

The winning picture will be in the pool of frontpage pictures for the next month and will be shown for one week.

And I think I could add the post of my wish here.

How about contest of PORTRAIT?

I've seen many good portraits in What's Hot and the latest posts of my contacts.
I think it NOT easy to take a shot of people.
Because they are alive and change their faces every minite.

..It is rare to see a good portrate which express his or her personality and emotion well.

So I hope this group will have a contest for PORTRATE someday.

All in all I think it was a good start into the "contest season". :)
I really like the winners and love the great diversity in the pictures for this theme!
So thank you all for taking part. I'm looking forward to your ideas for future contests!

Some people still had problems taking part though. I think I don't explain plainly enough how I want this group to work. So tipps are welcome here...
Most problems came with the desired aspect ratio of 3:2. I plan to write a thread on this with simple explanatory pictures which I can link in the rules.
The second problem was where to post. I added an "(winners only)" to the group name, but I don't think that's enough. I think now that the first contest is finished it becomes a bit more obvious, where to put which picture. Here's my idea again anyway:
To take part in the contest simply post your picture in the according thread in this group.
The group pools is reserved to the winners only.

Any thoughts on this are appreciated...

El tema del concurso dependerá del mes en que será exhibida la foto, y cambiará de acuerdo a la estación, etc. de acuerdo con la dirección de Ipernity.

Cómo participar:

Además de ser fiel al tema, las contribuciones tienen que ajustarse a las siguientes especificaciones. Esto es debido a que las fotos que aparecen en portada representan de alguna manera a Ipernity.

- Orientación apaisada, con relación de aspecto cercana a 3:2 (al menos, 560x373)
- La foto no tiene que tener marco alguno; tampoco ha de mostrar marcas de agua, mención de copyright o firma visibles
(estas reglas permitirán mantener una portada "limpia")

- El participante ha de ser el autor y tener todas las autorizaciones para publicar la foto
(por ejemplo, los modelos fotográficos pueden tener un derecho a vetar determinados usos de las fotos en las que posan).
- El participante debe tener su foto compartida como "pública"
(estas normas son necesarias para cubrir los aspectos legales, ya que las fotos participantes podrían ir a la portada)

-Sólo una foto por participante
(habrá un concurso cada mes, por tanto tendrás suficientes oportunidades de participar)

Las especificaciones arriba mencionadas son de obligado cumplimiento. Las contribuciones que no cumplan alguna de ellas serán borradas.

- Se recomienda que la foto tenga un título (también se publicará en la portada)
- Se recomienda que la foto tenga licencia Creative Commons
(La Dirección apoya el uso de estas licencias)
- La foto debería ser conforme a la marca y servicios de Ipernity.
(Ipernity es una marca comercial que debe preocuparse de su imagen pública. Sé que esto limita tu libertad artística, pero a su vez aumenta las posibilidades de salir en portada. A la hora de votar, considera también este punto además de la temática).

En lo posible, observa también estas reglas tanto para concursar como para votar. Particularmente, no observar la última especificación podría conducir a la expulsión del concurso.

Para participar, responde al mensaje de convocatoria e incorpora tu foto en tamaño "mediano". No la añadas directamente a la colección del grupo, que se reserva sólo para las ganadoras. Incluye el número consecutivo a la última respuesta (#1, #2,....) y el título.

Cuando se cierre el concurso, habrá un periodo para que todos los miembros del grupo voten. Puedes votar tres contribuciones por orden: la primera recibe 3 puntos, la segunda 2 puntos y la tercera 1 punto.

Comment participer :

En plus du thème, les participations doivent correspondrent aux spécificités suivantes.
Ceci du au fait que les images représenteront IPERNITY d’une certaine manière, et devront correspondre à l’éthique d’IPERNITY.

- La photo devra être orientée en mode « paysage » uniquement et proche du format 3/2 (au moins 560x373 pixels)
- La photo n’aura pas de cadre, pas de filigrane visible, pas de copyrights (visible sur la photo… ils ne sont pas interdits), ni de signature dans la photo
Ces deux règles sont nécessaires pour conserver la page d’accueil dans une certaine clarté.

- Vous devez être l’auteur et vous devez avoir toutes les autorisations (celles des modèles…)
- Vous devez partager publiquement votre photo.
Ces deux règles sont une nécessité légale afin que la photo soit publiée sur la première page.

- une seule photo par membre
Il y aura un concours tous les mois, donc d’autres chances de participer.

Les règles ci-dessus doivent impérativement être suivies, ou la photo sera supprimée du concours purement et simplement.

- Idéalement, la photo doit avoir un titre
Il sera affiché sur la première page également

- Idéalement, suivre les « créatives commons licences »
IPERNITY encourage leur utilisation

- La photo doit correspondre à l’état d’Esprit de la marque IPERNITY
IPERNITY est une marque et doit faire attention à la manière dont ils apparaissent en public, et sont représentés. Vous pensez que cela peut être restrictif pour vous, mais cela multiplie vos chances de passer sur la première page du site.
Quand vous votez, vous devez garder cela à l’esprit ainsi que la correspondance avec le thème choisi.

Ces règles doivent être suivies également, surtout la dernière, qui peut, dans certains cas entraîner la suppression de la photo.
N’oubliez pas cela non plus lorsque vous votez.

Merci de poster votre image en "moyenne" taille dans la discussion appropriée (ne la postez pas dans le groupe qui est réservé aux photos gagnantes.
Ajoutez y un numéro (le #1, #2, #3 ….) et le titre également

Quand le concours est terminé il sera temps pour chaque membre du goupe de voter.
Vous devez voter pour 3 photos
Le premier vote recevra 3 points, le second 2 points et enfin 1 point

La photo gagnante sera dans le groupe des images de la première page pour le mois suivant et affichée pour une semaine

Unfortunately I had to take several pictures out of the contest already. The main reason is the wrong aspect ratio. Please make sure that your picture really is close to 3:2 before you post!

When I delete a picture I always try to send a mail with an explanation. When you correct the error like the wrong aspect ratio please repost your picture!!!
