A day trip to Durham is an unforgettable experience. We see here the River Wear looping around the Romanesque Durham Cathedral and Norman Durham Castle. There is much to do and like about this old city.

We are just outside Durham here, on the River Wear. A good place to take a canoe or paddle board for miles of fun on the water. Notice the smoke in the near distance as it creeps into this river area. The smoke created by a nearby wheat field going up in flames. At the moment it does not concern these children or the dog but it was to get worse.

Greenfield Waterfall

Sometimes called Birchen Clough Waterfall. After days of heavy rain it was time to get my boots back on and try another go at capturing one of my local waterfalls in slow motion. Here is a 1/15th sec shot via my 3 stop NF filter.

A resurrected Panoramio photo here, uploaded onto Panoramio in Feb 2009, On looking at my Panoramio screen print, I see it was viewed 3399 times – quite a contrast from our little Ipernity site nowadays.

This building was demolished some years back now to make way for a new housing development. I have no idea of its original purpose only that it was just two floors of open space maybe used for some kind of fabrication or canal goods storage facility as it fronted the local Huddersfield canal.

Ballachulish Bridge and Beinn a' Bheithir Glencoe

After having passed through Glencoe and over the Ballachulish Bridge I find myself on the banks of the River Leven looking south towards Beinn a' Bheithir Glencoe. A fabulous spot if not for the constant rumble of traffic above. The road from here towards these mountains splits to either Oban or Glencoe. If I was to travel behind me here I would end up in Fort William just a mere 12 miles (19km) north. The river here has flown down through Loch Leven and then into Loch Linnhe just to my right and from there down to the Atlantic Ocean. PiPs

A capture from our trip to Wales in 2016 brings us to the Glaslyn Gorge just below the beautiful village of Beddgelert. To be honest the British Isles has many rivers that look like this but our memories of walking for miles along the rocky river bank here makes it one of our all-time favourite rivers. At this point, a few miles below the village the river is technically the River Colwyn that joined the Glaslyn just before it entered the village. From here it runs down to the sea at Porthmadog via the Aberglaslyn Pass. It is 16 miles (26 km) long in total.

A wonderful cystal clear freshwater river, running down into Inverie Bay in Loch Nevis. Flowing through a scenic, roadless wilderness it is a favourite river for sea trout and salmon. Given more time and effort and following the river upstream for 4.5 miles, I would eventually have come to its source at Loch an Dubh-lochain and the nearby peak of Luinne Bheinn at 939 m.

Our trip today consisted of a walk from Llangollen itself, for 5 km along the Llangollen canal to these falls. It is in fact a man-made weir on the River Dee designed by Thomas Telford. The distinctively shaped weir, which is 460 feet (140 m) long, helps create a pool of water that can enter the Llangollen Canal

Since 2009, the weir has been part of a World Heritage Site, which covers 11 miles (18 km) of the Llangollen Canal from just west of Horseshoe Falls to just beyond the Chirk canal aqueduct and the railway viaduct not very far fro the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The canal was awarded World Heritage status because of the bold civil engineering solutions needed to construct a canal with no locks through such difficult terrain.

Llangollen, railway and River Dee

Llangollen in Wales has a lot going for it with wonderful surrounding countryside including the famous horseshoe falls and Dinas Brân castle. This river scene from the centre of the town offers thrilling kayaking experiences as well as good views. We see here the famous heritage railway station of Llangollen too, unfortunately had I waited another half an hour I would have got a steam train in shot too.
The Pip (last photo) shows the actual station in use.

Otherwise known as the Llangollen Aqueduct.

See the canal barge and walkers on the top crossing this wide valley. Taken rom the old road bridge crossing the River Dee.

Designed by Thomas Telford, It is a navigable aqueduct that carries the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee in the Vale of Llangollen in north-east Wales. The 19-arched stone and cast iron structure is for use by narrowboats and was completed in 1805 having taken ten years to design and build. It is 12 feet (3.7 metres) wide and is the longest aqueduct in Great Britain as well as the highest canal aqueduct in the world. A towpath runs alongside the watercourse on one side.

We are in fact on the banks of the River Brathay as it runs out of Elter Water here. Heavy rains abound but the sun peeps out to lighten the foreground for us here. As you can imagine, I loved the brightly lit fence post here as well as the illuminance of the grass.

So far this winter, our weather has been almost totally grey with constant rain and mizzle. This taken a few weeks ago now has been the only real sign of winters of how I like them. Taken on my local walk in a nearby valley I had walked over the bridge and turned around to see this golden light through the trees as the sun at last came over the edge of the valley

A slow shutter capture of the River Brathay as it tumbles down Skelwith Falls after quite severe flooding in this area. Certainly not a spot to loose ones footing whilst taking photographs like this :) A small series of steps and an iron bridge brought me to this island that is a favourite place for selfies in the summer I gather. (A future photo for our HFF group maybe.) We are actually on our way to walk the bank of the nearby lake of Elter Water.

The windmill, Cley next the Sea

After posting a photo from Wells-next-the-Sea (PiP), just some days ago on here I was reminded of a gem of a windmill just a short 12km from here at Cley. Cley next the sea is described as an 18th-centary landmark village and this mill holds special memories for me as a) I have actually stopped here for a night, long ago now and b) have attended my niece’s wedding in the same windmill just 12 years back. This was taken on that occasion whilst waiting for the ceremony to begin-I think! The mill was built in the early 19th c. It is a five-story tower mill with a fixed cap that no longer turns in the wind.

Storm damage

As we approach this part of our Mossley canal (really called the Huddersfield Narrow) we encounter a fallen tree bridging the canal, brought down by the recent storm Claudia. A tree surgeon looks on as his colleague cuts pieces from the right hand side. A canal barge lies just beyond the tree presumably enabling the felling work.
To me though, this was not about a fallen tree but the magnificent lighting.

A walk down our canal system is always worthwhile at this time of year as it is one of the few green paths that is relatively dry underfoot. As can be seen most of our autumnal golden leaves have already gone from here after recent storms but this curved walled part and its reflections can still bring a smile to our faces.

A most enjoyable stroll around the bottom of our Chew Valley near Dovestones reservoir cannot help but be endearing. An obvious 3-shot HDR render here gives us a slightly painted effect but that is how it felt in real life as well. Well worth getting my boots wet and muddy for, I think.
