Il y a plein de "Plus beaux villages de France", mais pour moi, Rochefort-en-Terre est vraiment l'un des plus beaux. C'est comme un voyage dans le temps, avec ses ruelles pavées, maisons à encorbellement, enseignes stylisées, et partout les fleurs soulignant la pierre - chaque détail est soigné ici.

A LITTLE GEM NESTLED IN THE HEART OF MORBIHAN. There are plenty of ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France’, but for me, Rochefort-en-Terre is truly one of the most beautiful. It’s like stepping back in time, with its cobbled streets, corbelled houses, stylised shop signs, and flowers everywhere setting off the stonework – every detail is carefully tended to here.

EIN KLEINES JUWEL IM HERZEN DES MORBIHAN. Es gibt zwar viele "schönste Dörfer Frankreichs", aber für mich ist Rochefort-en-Terre wirklich eines der schönsten. Mit seinen gepflasterten Gassen, den Erkerhäusern, den stilvollen Nasenschildern und den Blumen, die überall das Mauerwerk hervorheben, ist es wie eine Reise in die Vergangenheit – hier ist jedes Detail sorgfältig gepflegt.

Il y a de tout dans cette petite épicerie d'antan comme en n'en voit plus. La boutique est étroite mais propose tous les produits alimentaires. Elle est ouverte de 9h à 23h, et le propriétaire a toujours le sourire pour ses clients.

AS IF FORGOTTEN BY TIME... You can find everything in this little old-fashioned grocery shop, the sort you don’t see anymore. The shop is narrow but stocks a full range of food products. It’s open from 9 am to 11 pm, and the owner always has a smile for his customers.

WIE VON DER ZEIT VERGESSEN... Es gibt alles Mögliche in diesem kleinen Lebensmittelgeschäft von früher, wie man es heute kaum noch findet. Der Laden ist eng aber führt alle Arten von Lebensmitteln. Er ist von 9 bis 23 Uhr für seine Kunden geöffnet, und der Besitzer hat immer ein Lächeln für seine Kunden parat.

This house has become a ‘lived-in’ museum”: a visit offers access to spaces where everyday objects, travel souvenirs and unfinished works are interwoven. Every surface bears the artist’s mark, and it is clear that Tatin has broken down the traditional boundary between home and artwork, between life and creation. He has transformed a rural property into a veritable work of art in which one can live.

LA MAISON DE L'ARTISTE. Cette maison est devenue un musée "habité", sa visite permet d’accéder à des espaces où s’entrelacent objets du quotidien, souvenirs de voyage et œuvres inachevées. Chaque surface porte la marque du créateur, et on constate que Tatin a aboli la frontière traditionnelle entre habitat et œuvre d’art, entre vie et création. Il a transformé une propriété rurale en véritable œuvre d’art habitable.

DAS HAUS DES KÜNSTLERS. Dieses Haus ist zu einem "bewohnten" Museum”. geworden, bei einem Rundgang durch das Haus gelangt man in Räume, in denen Alltagsgegenstände, Reiseerinnerungen und unvollendete Werke miteinander verschmelzen. Jede Oberfläche trägt die Handschrift des Künstlers, und man erkennt, dass Tatin die traditionelle Grenze zwischen Wohnraum und Kunstwerk, zwischen Leben und Schöpfung aufgehoben hat. Er hat ein ländliches Anwesen in ein wahres bewohnbares Kunstwerk verwandelt.

Ni l'un ni l'autre : c'est le musée d'un artiste français (Robert Tatin) connu pour ses sculptures mythiques uniques, bas-reliefs et jardins, un endroit vraiment atypique. À l'origine du site se trouve sa maison ancienne, et au fil des ans, il construit un domaine décoré de grandes sculptures en ciment coloré, en s'inspirant notamment de ses voyages et des courants artistiques du passé. Robert Tatin l'avait imaginé comme un lien entre les civilisations de l'Orient et celles de l'Occident. L'artiste a consacré 21 ans pour réaliser cette oeuvre monumentale.

Am Ursprung war sein altes Haus, und im Laufe der Jahre baute er ein Anwesen auf, das mit grossen Skulpturen aus farbigem Zement geschmückt ist, wobei er sich insbesondere von seinen Reisen und künstlerischen Strömungen der Vergangenheit inspirieren liess. Robert Tatin hatte es sich als Verbindung zwischen den Zivilisationen des Orients und Okzidents vorgestellt. Der Künstler hat 21 Jahre lang an der Fertigstellung dieses monumentalen Werks gearbeitet.

Cette maison a été construite en 1686. Sa particularité réside dans l'ancienne entrée de la cour : celle-ci a été transformée en fenêtre, tout en conservant l'arc de l'ancienne entrée. Non loin de là se dresse l'ancien château fort jadis entouré d'eau, construit au milieu du XIVe siècle. Aujourd'hui, il en reste les remparts avec la porte et la tour d'entrée ainsi que le pont à trois arches surbaissées (voir PiP)..

HERE YOU'LL NEED A WEDGE TO LEVEL THE BED;-) This house was built in 1686. What makes it special is the former courtyard entrance: it was converted into a window, whilst retaining the arch of the original entrance. Not far from there stands the old fortified castle, once surrounded by water, built in the mid-14th century. Today, all that remains are the ramparts with the gate and the entrance tower, as well as the bridge with its three low arches (see PiP).

HIER BRAUCHT MAN EINEN KEIL, UM DAS BETT GERADE ZU STELLEN ;-) Dieses Haus wurde 1686 erbaut. Das Besondere ist hier die ehemalige Hofeinfahrt : sie wurde umgebaut in ein Fenster, und der Bogen der früheren Einfahrt wurde dabei übernommen. Nicht weit davon entfernt steht die ehemalige Wasserburg, sie wurde Mitte des 14. Jh. errichtet. Heute ist noch die Burgmauer mit Toranlage und Torturm sowie die Brücke aus drei flach gespannten Bögen erhalten (siehe PIP).

IL Y A 500 ANS, C'ETAIT LA PREMIERE MAIRIE, construit en 1529. La fontaine qui se trouve devant rappelle la première fontaine publique installée à cet endroit au XVIIe siècle, alimentée par une source et à laquelle appartenaient à l'origine deux abreuvoirs en grès destinés au bétail. Le bâtiment a été l'hôtel de ville de Hofheim pendant plus de 440 ans, jusqu'à l'emménagement dans le nouvel hôtel de ville en 1974. Après rénovation et transformation, il est devenu l'actuel "Altes Rathaus Café".

VOR 500 JAHREN WAR ES DAS ERSTE RATHAUS, errichtet 1529. Der Laufbrunnen davor erinnert an den im 17. Jh. an dieser Stelle eingerichteten ersten öffentlichen Brunnen, der von einer Quelle gespeist wurde und zu dem ursprünglich zwei Sandsteintröge als Viehtränke gehörten. Das Gebäude war bis zum Bezug des neuen Rathauses 1974 mehr als 440 Jahre das Rathaus der Stadt Hofheim. Nach Sanierung und Umbau wurde es zum heutigen "Altes Rathaus Café".

La petite tour entourée de vieilles maisons faisait autrefois partie des remparts. Après que Hofheim eut obtenu le statut de ville en 1352, les remparts furent érigés progressivement au cours des décennies suivantes. Il n'en reste aujourd'hui que quelques vestiges visibles, dont l'une des deux portes de la ville, appelée "Untertor". C'est là que fut également installée, pendant un certain temps, la prison préventive. Aujourd'hui, c'est un pub apprécié, et très beau à voir au début du printemps, pendant la floraison des cerisiers.

THE PERFECT PLACE TO HAVE A DRINK. The small tower flanked by the old houses was once part of the town wall. After Hofheim was granted town privileges in 1352, the town wall was constructed in stages over several decades. Few visible remains have survived today; one of them is one of the two town gates, known as the “Untertor”. At times, this building also housed the remand prison. Today it is a popular pub and particularly worth seeing in early spring during the cherry blossom season.

DER PERFEKTE ORT FÜR EINEN DRINK. Das Türmchen mit den alten Häusern war einst Teil der Stadtmauer. Nachdem Hofheim im Jahr 1352 Stadtrechte erhalten hatte, wurde in mehreren Jahrzehnten die Stadtmauer stufenweise errichtet. Sichtbare Reste sind heute nur noch wenige erhalten geblieben, einer davon ist eines der beiden Stadttore, "Untertor" genannt. Hier war zeitweise auch das Untersuchungsgefängnis untergebracht. Heute ist es ein beliebtes Lokal und besonders sehenswert am Anfang des Frühlings während der Kirschblüte.

This is a glimpse through the gate. After being on the market for a long time, it finally found a buyer. The buyer moved in, but only stayed for a year. Since then, it stands empty, set in a large garden with a stream running through it. Only every now and then, someone drops by, to do a bit of gardening.

CETTE MAISON, SERAIT-ELLE HANTÉE ? Voici un coup d'oeil à travers le portail. Longtemps mise en vente, elle avait trouvé enfin un propriétaire. Celui-ci y a aménagé, mais n'est resté qu'un an. Depuis elle est restée fermée, dans un grand jardin traversé par un ruisseau..Seulement de temps en temps, quelqu'un passe pour s'occuper un peu du jardin.

KÖNNTE ES IN DIESEM HAUS SPUKEN? Dies ist ein Blick durch das Tor. Es stand lange Zeit zum Verkauf und hatte endlich einen Käufer gefunden. Dieser zog ein, blieb aber nur ein Jahr. Seitdem steht es leer, inmitten eines grossen Gartens, durch den ein Bach fliesst. Nur ab und zu kommt jemand vorbei, um sich etwas um den Garten zu kümmern.

c'est le "Théâtre du Costume" : à ce coin de rue disparaissent les minutes et les siècles pour plonger dans ce musée hors du temps et de l'habituel. Le musée retrace mille ans d'histoire du costume à travers une partie sur le Moyen Âge (1/7ème de l'échelle humaine) et une partie allant de Louis XII à 1900 (1/3 de l'échelle humaine). Ces personnages sont mis en situation de façon à donner une vie aux diverses scènes.

A PLACE OUTSIDE OF TIME, that is the 'costume theatre': just around this corner, time seems to stand still as you step into this museum, a world apart from the ordinary. A museum tracing thousand years of costume history through a section on the Middle Ages (1/7th of life-size) and a section spanning from Louis XII to 1900 (1/3 of life-size). These figures are posed in such a way as to bring the various scenes to life.

EIN ORT AUSSERHALB DER ZEIT, das ist das "Kostümtheater" : an dieser Strassenecke verschwinden die Minuten und Jahrhunderte, um in dieses Museum einzutauchen, das jenseits von Zeit und Gewohnheit liegt. Das Museum zeichnet tausend Jahre Kostümgeschichte nach, mit einem Bereich zum Mittelalter (im Maßstab 1:7) und einem Bereich von Ludwig XII. bis 1900 (im Maßstab 1:3). Die Figuren sind so in Szene gesetzt, dass sie den verschiedenen Szenen Leben einhauchen.

Nous avons fait une visite captivante dans ce musée. Il a pour vocation de préserver la mémoire et la civilisation de l'eau au Maroc. Les intérieurs marocains sont de toute beauté. Des colonnes sculptées, des plafonds peints, parfois aussi des lignes épurées comme ici, mais surtout les murs et portes finement ciselés. Le plâtre ciselé est une technique artisanale ancienne qui consiste à sculpter le plâtre pour créer des motifs et des reliefs décoratifs.
PATION WITH FOUNTAIN. Moroccan interiors are truly beautiful. They feature carved columns, painted ceilings, sometimes clean lines like here, but above all, intricately carved walls and doors. Carved plaster is an ancient craft technique that involves sculpting plaster to create decorative patterns and reliefs.

INNENHOF MIT BRUNNEN. Marokkanische Innenräume sind von grosser Schönheit. Geschnitzte Säulen, bemalte Decken, manchmal auch klare Linien wie hier, vor allem aber die mit Reliefs verzierten Wände und Türen. Der Stuck mit Reliefs ist eine alte Handwerkstechnik, bei der Gips geschnitzt wird, um dekorative Motive und Reliefs zu schaffen.

Au cours de notre voyage vers les montagnes de l'Atlas, nous avons traversé des paysages à couper le souffle. Ce qui m'a beaucoup impressionné, ce sont ces villages accrochés à la montagne dont les couleurs se fondent avec celles du relief.

CLINGING TO THE MOUNTAIN SIDES. On our journey to the Atlas Mountains, we passed through breathtaking landscapes. What really struck me were the villages nestled against the mountain sides, their colours blending seamlessly with those of the landscape.

AN DEN BERGHÄNGEN FESTGEKLAMMERT. Auf unserer Fahrt zum Atlasgebirge durchquerten wir atemberaubende Landschaften. Was mich besonders beeindruckt hatte, waren diese Dörfer, die sich an die Hänge schmiegen und deren Farben mit denen der Landschaft verschmelzen.

Ce que je trouve remarquable dans cette rue, ce n'est pas seulement le jeu d'ombres et de lumières sur les façades en pierre des maisons, mais aussi la "forêt" d'antennes sur les toits ;-)

ONLY ONE HOUSE DOESN'T HAVE AN AERIAL! What I find remarkable about this street is not only the play of light and shadow on the stone facades of the houses, but also the "forest" of aerials on the roofs ;-)

NUR EIN HAUS HAT KEINE ANTENNE ! Was ich in dieser Strassenzeile bemerkenswert finde, ist nicht nur das Licht- und Schattenspiel an den Steinfassaden der Hauser, sondern auch der Antennenwald auf den Dächern ;-)

Alençon Castle has been listed as a historic monument since 1862, but this contemporary metal staircase was added during renovation work. In this photo, you can see it in context on the right.

UN SACRÉ CONTRASTE... Le château d'Alençon est classé aux monuments historiques depuis 1862, mais cet escalier contemporain en métal a été ajouté lors des travaux de rénovation. Sur cette photo, on peut le voir dans son contexte à droite.

EIN ZIEMLICHER KONTRAST... Die Burg von Alençon steht seit 1862 unter Denkmalschutz, aber diese moderne Treppe aus Metall wurde im Zuge der Renovierungsarbeiten hinzugefügt. Auf diesem Foto ist sie rechts in ihrem Umfeld zu sehen.

Un agriculteur, Henri Chesnais, a réalisé depuis sa retraite en 1992 et jusqu'à son décès en 2016 de nombreuses reproductions miniatures en pierre. Au fil des ans, les constructions se sont succédées pour constituer un ensemble tout à fait remarquable tant par la fidélité et la qualité de la reproduction que par la somme de travail qu’il représente. Sur mon collage on voit le pont du Gard, le château de Chambord, le château-fort de Lassay, le Parlement de Bretagne à Rennes, le château de Châteaugiron, une ferme fortifiée de Lozère, pour ne montrer qu'eux.

ON SUNDAY, WE WERE IN LOURDES;-) A farmer, Henri Chesnais, created numerous miniature reproductions made of stone, between his retirement in 1992 and his death in 2016. Over the years, the constructions followed one another to form a collection that is remarkable both for the fidelity and quality of the reproductions and for the amount of work involved. My collage shows the Pont du Gard, the castle of Chambord, the fortress in Lassay, the Parliament of Brittany in Rennes, the castle in Châteaugiron and a fortified farm in Lozère, to show but a few.

SONNTAG WAREN WIR IN LOURDES ;-) Ein Landwirt, Henri Chesnais, hat seit seiner Pensionierung im Jahr 1992 bis zu seinem Tod 2016 zahlreiche Miniatur-Reproduktionen aus Stein angefertigt. Im Laufe der Jahre entstanden immer mehr Bauwerke, die sowohl durch die Genauigkeit und Qualität der Reproduktionen als auch durch den damit verbundenen Arbeitsaufwand beeindrucken. Auf meiner Collage sind die Pont du Gard, das Schloss Chambord, die Burg Lassay, das Parlament der Bretagne in Rennes, das Schloss Châteaugiron und ein befestigter Bauernhof in Lozère zu sehen, um nur einige zu zeigen.

Lime kiln and lime burner's house - HFF

It was built in 1834 and was used to transform limestone into lime: the limestone was extracted from the surrounding area and then transported to the top of the kiln. Filled with a mixture of limestone and wood (or anthracite), the kiln was then heated to around 1000°C. After a few days of cooling, the lime was collected from the bottom of the kiln. This ‘quick’ lime was then ‘slaked’ with water to be used as a soil improver. The use of chemical fertilisers led to the disappearance of this industry.

FOUR A CHAUX ET MAISON DE CHAUFOURNIER. Il a été construit en 1834, et était destiné à transformer le calcaire en chaux : la pierre (calcaire) était extraite des alentours puis transportée au sommet de l'édifice. Rempli d'un mélange de calcaire et bois (ou anthracite), le four était alors chauffé à environ 1000°C. Après quelques jours de refroidissement, on récupérait la chaux par le bas du four. Cette chaux "vive" était alors "éteinte" avec de l'eau pour être utilisée comme amendement. C'est l'usage des engrais chimiques qui fera disparaître cette fabrication.

KALKOFEN UND HAUS DES KALKBRENNERS. Er wurde 1834 erbaut und diente dazu, Kalkstein in Kalk umzuwandeln: der Kalkstein wurde in der Umgebung abgebaut und dann auf die Spitze des Ofens transportiert. Der mit einer Mischung aus Kalkstein und Holz (oder Anthrazit) gefüllte Ofen wurde dann auf etwa 1000 °C erhitzt. Nach einigen Tagen Abkühlungszeit wurde der Kalk am Boden des Ofens entnommen. Dieser "lebende" Kalk wurde dann mit Wasser "gelöscht", um als Bodenverbesserungsmittel verwendet zu werden. Durch den Einsatz chemischer Düngemittel verschwand schliesslich diese Produktionsweise.

Quatre générations de femmes se sont succédées derrière le comptoir : l'arrière grand-mère l’a ouvert à la fin du XIXe siècle, ont suivi les grands-parents, puis leur fille l’a tenu pendant 40 ans et depuis 2006, c'est l'arrière-petite fille qui a repris le flambeau. C'est un bar de village comme on se les imagine, cultivant la convivialité et la simplicité qui le caractérise. Ici, chacun a ses habitudes et on discute entre personnes de tous âges.

A 100% FAMILY-RUN VILLAGE PUB. Four generations of women have worked behind the counter: the great-grandmother opened it at the end of the 19th century, followed by the grandparents, then their daughter ran it for 40 years, and since 2006, the great-granddaughter has taken up the torch. It's a village bar just as you'd imagine it, cultivating the friendliness and simplicity that characterises it. Here, everyone has their habits and people of all ages chat together.

EINE 100 % FAMILIENGEFÜHRTE DORFKNEIPE. Vier Generationen von Frauen haben sich hinter dem Bartresen abgewechselt : die Urgrossmutter eröffnete sie Ende des 19. Jh., dann folgten die Grosseltern, anschliessend führte ihre Tochter sie 40 Jahre lang und seit 2006 hat die Urenkelin das Ruder übernommen. Es ist eine Dorfkneipe, wie man sie sich vorstellt, geprägt von Geselligkeit und Einfachheit. Hier hat jeder seine Gewohnheiten und Menschen jeden Alters plaudern miteinander.

Autrefois elle a dû se trouver toute seule, dans la vallée, entourée de jardins ou champs, mais aujourd'hui elle se trouve en plein milieu d'un grand centre commercial, dans un coin d'Espagne à la frontière avec la France. ABANDONED...There is still a letterbox, but no one lives in this house anymore. It must have once stood alone in the valley, surrounded by gardens or fields, but today it is located in the middle of a large shopping centre, in a corner of Spain on the border with France. To give you a better idea of the site, I am adding a screenshot from Google Earth that clearly shows the location.

VERLASSEN... Es gibt noch einen Briefkasten, aber niemand wohnt mehr in diesem Haus. Früher muss es hier allein im Tal gestanden haben, umgeben von Gärten oder Feldern, aber heute befindet es sich mitten in einem grossen Einkaufszentrum, in einer Ecke Spaniens an der Grenze zu Frankreich. Um die Lage besser zu veranschaulichen, füge ich einen Screenshot aus Google Earth hinzu, auf dem man die Lage gut erkennen kann.
