Otherwise known as Beacon Rock. It is in reality a small, active navigation light built in 1901 and is 7.5 meters high standing just outside of Mallaig harbour. In the background we see the shores of the Isle of Skye with its impressive mountains further away.

Hartland Point Lighthouse

Another retro look from 2010.

A grade II listed building at Hartland Point, Devon. The point marks the western limit (on the English side) of the Bristol Channel with the Atlantic Ocean continuing to the west.
Designed by Sir James Douglass, construction began in November 1873. The light was electrified in 1927. The tower was automated in 1984 and controlled from Trinity House Operations Centre at Harwich in Essex. The keepers' dwellings have since been demolished to make room for a Helipad to be constructed. This was necessary due to the precarious nature of the access road which is liable to frequent rock falls and landslips. Vehicular access is now very difficult and the gates tend to remain locked. The fog signal was discontinued in 2010.
Having carried out a thorough assessment of the requirements for Aids to Navigation off Hartland Point, Trinity House determined that the light at this location could be reduced to a nominal range of 8 nautical miles. This light can be more economically provided by a modern LED beacon in front of the original lighthouse, with no detriment to the safety of the Mariner. Consequently, the old light was decommissioned in 2012.
The Lighthouse was marketed and sold by Trinity House at a £500,000 guide price, consisting of "the former lighthouse, three bedroom living accommodation over two storeys, various stores, a helipad and access via a surfaced road that leads up the cliff to the gated entrance. The site in total amounts to about 16 acres of cliff and coastline, and has the best sea views in the area.

A window on Lladdwyn Island

A colourful view of Tŵr Mawr lighthouse on Lladdwyn Island through the old window of St Dwynwen’s Church. This is a ruined medieval church dedicated to St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, often seen as the Welsh equivalent of St Valentine. It was a place of pilgrimage during the Middle Ages as archaeological work has shown traces of earlier buildings beneath the present ruins, indicating a long and complex ecclesiastical history. It has a cross shaped plan.
Tŵr Mawr lighthouse is Welsh for “great tower” and started life as an unlit marker it was improved with lighting in 1846. It was made redundant when the smaller nearby tower was fitted with more modern equipment in 1975

As we walk along the beach at Happisburgh the sight of the lighthouse is always in our sight. I must admit that even without the lighthouse I find the shape, colours and curves of the clifftop most satisfying.

A visit to the Norfolk Seaside village of Happisburgh cannot be made without seeing this very prominent lighthouse. It used to be some distance from the top of the sea cliff edge but that distance is now becoming smaller. We don’t get to see many lighthouses in this good condition, maybe the absence of rough seas bouncing of its walls make a difference. This lighthouse looks good from a few different positions and so I shall share more views with you later.
It is the only independently operated lighthouse in Great Britain and is also the oldest working lighthouse in East Anglia. Historically it was also often called Haisborough or Haisbro' Lighthouse. Height: 26 m, Opened: 1790. WiKi

La Corbière Lighthouse

This lighthouse, the only lighthouse on the Channel Island of Jersey, poses problems for people like me, Inasmuch that there are just too many great viewpoints of it. I took loads of photographs in the couple of hours of being there but if I had the chance to return in the golden hour, a stormy day or when there is snow or ice then it might take a lifetime to satisfy my photographic instant love for it and its surroundings. Here is a capture that tries to justify why it is here in the first place, being surrounded by vicious rocks that would tear any approaching boat apart in seconds. Its main job however is to steer ships safely to the main harbour of St Helier just a few sea miles away.
La Corbière is significant as the first lighthouse in the British Isles built of concrete, completed in 1874

It is not very obvious here that we are looking at the Maseline harbour on the Isle of Sark which is one of the Channel Islands.. That is because it is hidden and protected by the concrete harbour wall we can see. Incoming passenger boats and ferries pass by these jagged rocks before entry, guided overhead by the Sark lighthouse. Once disembarked, we go through the shown tunnel before climbing (or riding by tractor trailer) up the steep lane to Sark’s main village.

The lighthouse is actually called 'Point Robert' Lighthouse- Established 1913

A flight of steps on Lladdwyn Island brings us to the old ‘Great Lighthouse’ on Lladdwyn Island, Wales. Constructed in the nineteenth century, it was made redundant in 1975. There is not much to be seen close up to it other than the fantastic Snowdonia mountain range but one can walk around it and imagine strong waves in the constant winds here.

Jersey, one of the Channel Islands: Sit and enjoy with me this most wonderful sight. The lighthouse of La Corbière is set on a tidal island out at sea, surrounded by dark rock. It is at the extreme south-western point of Jersey in St. Brélade. The name means "a place where crows gather", deriving from the word corbîn meaning crow. You see it here at low tide and accessible via the tidal causeway.

With the background of Snowdonia we see here the smaller tower on this Island. It is in fact the very old Tŵr Bach Lighthouse
Somewhat overshadowed by Tŵr Mawr — a fact that’s also backed up by it’s name, meaning ‘small tower’ —Tŵr Bach Lighthouse was actually the original lighthouse on Llanddwyn Island. It is believed to have been built as a landmark and day beacon (an unlit lighthouse). However, it couldn’t easily be seen by ships approaching from the west, and for that reason, another lighthouse (Tŵr Mawr) was built in its place.

A special scene here from this wonderful Welsh Island showing the old lighthouse and the plain memorial cross. The inscription reads: “Dwynwen“; “in the sixtieth year of Queen Victoria 1897“; “in memory of St Dwynwen Jan 25th 1465“; and, “erected by the Hon F G Wynn owner of the isle“. This is about 6mtrs high.
There is in fact another cross nearby too, that one being a Celtic memorial.

Anybody taking the short ferry ride from Glenelg to Kylerhea on the Isle of Skye are treated to a hidden lighthouse as they approach the ferry landing on the mainland.

"The Kylerhea Ferry lighthouse is a restored octagonal white cast-iron tower that serves as an information center and mini shop at the Glenelg-Kylerhea ferry in Scotland. The lighthouse was originally built in 1910 and was relocated from Sandaig in 2002. Designed by David A & Charles Stevenson. Discontinued in 2004. It was saved by the local community and restored by the Northern Lighthouse Board. It contains information about the local area, including the turntable ferry, it is also a shop selling various items, and an honesty box system for buying tea and coffee.

The Glenelg Ferry crosses the Kylerhea Narrows, which is the original crossing point between Skye and the Mainland. The ferry is the last manual turntable ferry in the world. The crossing can be daunting due to the tidal flow between Skye and the mainland. "

This stretch of water below Kylerhea is know as Kyle Rhea and is technically the Sound of Sleat too. The lighthouse was designed by David A & Charles Stevenson. Established in 1892.

The Scottish mainland lies to the right and ahead as we are on the Isle of Skye.

Another reminder of our US trip that included Portland, Maine. Here we see one of its lighthouses, affectionally known as Bug Light. Built in 1855.This elegant-looking lighthouse is unique because it's believed to be the only lighthouse in the world shaped like a 4th-century Greek monument. Four Corinthian columns hold up the lens.

A place for the most dedicated UK explorer here. Just out of sight at the end of the headland of Dunnet Bay where we are based is this splendid lighthouse. Another built in 1831 by the renowned engineer Robert Stevenson. It is said that “Seal song” is often heard drifting up to the lighthouse from Brough Bay below. Certainly a great spot I can testify to.

A short walk along Thurso's Scrabster harbour brings us to this splendid lighthouse.

Just around the bay from Thurso on the western headland of Scrabster is Holburn Head Lighthouse. Close by in the harbour, ferries run from Scrabster to Stromness in Orkney.

Another David & Thomas Stevenson design. A light was first exhibited at Holburn Head on 1st September 1862, displaying a flashing white light towards the Pentland Firth and Thurso Bay. A red light sector shone towards Scrabster Roadstead. Discontinued in 2003.

We are here at the most north-westerly point in Great Britain. A small ferry ride then a rather rough drive over the wild countryside used as a military training area. Here we are greeted with a misty scene rising from the Atlantic Ocean to the famous lighthouse. The cape is separated from the rest of the mainland by the Kyle of Durness and consists of 107 square miles of moorland wilderness known as the Parph. Wikipedia

Channery Lighthouse.

Channery Point is perhaps Black Isles most famous tourist hot-spot. Not for its attractive lighthouse but for the sighting of its dolphins. It is one of the best spots in the UK to view bottlenose dolphins from the land. The dolphins are often visible off Chanonry point, particularly on an incoming tide when they play and fish in the strong currents. Porpoise and seals are also seen here.

We saw none but many people around us saw them!
