Storm damage

As we approach this part of our Mossley canal (really called the Huddersfield Narrow) we encounter a fallen tree bridging the canal, brought down by the recent storm Claudia. A tree surgeon looks on as his colleague cuts pieces from the right hand side. A canal barge lies just beyond the tree presumably enabling the felling work.
To me though, this was not about a fallen tree but the magnificent lighting.

A most enjoyable stroll around the bottom of our Chew Valley near Dovestones reservoir cannot help but be endearing. An obvious 3-shot HDR render here gives us a slightly painted effect but that is how it felt in real life as well. Well worth getting my boots wet and muddy for, I think.

Back on my local old railway walk and what a pleasure it always is when the trees and leaves are like this. This spot is only about 400m from my home.

I have many photos on Ipernity of this linear walk but I don’t think I have ever attempted to describe its origins: This used to be called the ‘Delph Donkey line’ and it served several small communities between Oldham and the village of Delph in Saddleworth. It was only 4.5 miles (7.2km) long and opened in 1851 to passengers but closed to them in 1955 whilst freight continued till 1963.
Why “Delph Donkey”? The line earned the nickname because:
The train was slow, reminiscent of a donkey’s pace. It served rural communities, where donkeys were once a common mode of transport. Some say the nickname came from locals who used the train to market days in Oldham or Delph

Crompton waterfall

As the sky turns blue and the rains abate we re-visit this spectacular waterfall. I am fairly close to the base and so an ultra wide angle lens is required with the resulting distortion to the top of the hill. The trees growing at a strange slant is also a result of all that but nevertheless this shot captures the essence of the falls with their accompanying golden trees at this time of year.

We are back in Dunham Massey to catch the autumn golds as we pass this grand old building surrounded by soft greens and yellowing leaves. See PiP for my earlier version.

The building itself is considered to be around 400 years old and originally functioned as a corn mill.

When I saw this tree against the sun and with a backdrop of woodland charm I felt as if I could hug it! I have always loved trees – the sight, feel and smell of them fills me with the joys of our earth.
This is another from the bottom of our Chew Valley and I cannot make any excuse for having had captured scenes from here before and sharing them with you –but you know –I cannot help it!!!

I am at the foot of Chew valley here. It runs down from the top Chew Reservoir to here, just about 75m from Dovestones reservoir. It is quite steep and it makes a narrow ravine near the top. An area I have walked many times in all weathers and seasons but I must admit these trees always look their best in the golden colours of autumn.

Seen on our local round walk this grey squirrel does what squirrels do at this time of year and that is to collect as many nuts as possible for its winter larder. As can be seen, our autumn is well under way.

Walking through the deer-park of Dunham Massey is always a good experience. The deer at this time of year are mainly in an isolated (from the public) part but they are free to roam around here too if they wish. The golden hues of autumn are well and truly with us now and in no time at all the trees will be bare.

A local walk to our Tandle Hills woodland park gives us a glimpse of this years oak tree bounty. Most of the other oaks had shed their acorns completely but this tree still had a bumper supply for the squirrels here.
