On this autumn Wednesday, Spitfires.com Supermarine Spitfire TR Mk IX SM520/G-ILDA did not fly at Solent Airport for technical reasons. At around 4pm, in the gathering gloom, it could be seen outside Bournemouth Avionics, with the engine cowlings off and doing an engine run.

Although it was only about 3.30 pm, that at this time of year can reasonably be described as 'late afternoon' and it was in late afternoon light that I took my first photographs from the newly accessible public area on the north side of Solent Airport.

In this picture are (from camera) hangars 9-4, hence the snappy title. Occupants include Transair, AT Aviation and Britten-Norman. The aircraft in the view include Cessna 340A G-HAFG and withdrawn Aurigny Trislander G-RLON 'sans moteurs'.

Notwithstanding the fact that the station has associations with WWII, it was a bit of a surprise to find suspended from the ceiling of the Butler-Henderson Café at Quorn & Woodhouse station, Great Central Railway, a model of Spitfire Mk. IX PV270. The real aircraft survives and, as far as I can tell, is in New Zealand. There are some superb photographs of that aircraft (as ZK-SPI) elsewhere on Flickr and I commend to you the work of the photographers responsible.
