We did want to walk the full length of this stripped part but the incoming tide did not allow us to do that. So a car ride to the other side and the previous photo (PiP) shows the results.

The stripes in the cliffs are caused by layers of different-coloured rock. The main layers are carrstone and chalk. Carrstone is the brown layer and consists of sandstone - sand cemented together by iron oxide (rust). In places where the cement is stronger, the rock is darker and less crumbly. There are no fossils in this layer apart from a little fossilised wood. The red and white chalk is made of limestone. Limestone forms in warm tropical climates, which suggests that Hunstanton's climate was once warmer than it is today. The colour of the red chalk is due to iron staining.
Horsey Windpump is a historic drainage windmill located near the village of Horsey, in Norfolk, England. It is also known as Horsey Windmill in some sources. Unlike many windmills built for grinding grain, this structure was created to help drain the low-lying marshes and fen land in the Broads area. A windpump has stood on the site since at least the early 18th century, the current tower was built in 1912. A major restoration project began in 2016: the cap and sails were removed, rebuilt, and in 2019 the windpump reopened to visitors with the sails functioning again (for the first time since 1943).
Just before that (out of sight) on the left is the harbour that we have yet to visit. As can be seen fishing and pleasure boats still ply these waters landing their sea harvest here. For the towns many visitors a walk along the earth bank passing the white stilted hut is a must. (See photo below). Once a horse-drawn tramway ran along the top bringing goods from the harbour/port to the town and from 1976 - 2021 a narrow gauge passenger train ran along there towards the beach. See PiP for opposite view. Best full screen.
Cley next the sea is described as an 18th-centary landmark village and this mill holds special memories for me as a) I have actually stopped here for a night, long ago now and b) have attended my niece’s wedding in the same windmill just 12 years back. This was taken on that occasion whilst waiting for the ceremony to begin-I think! The mill was built in the early 19th c. It is a five-story tower mill with a fixed cap that no longer turns in the wind.
“The ancient ruins of Creake Abbey, dating from the 13th Century, lie in a beautiful and tranquil valley set in 40 acres of meadow in the stunning north Norfolk countryside. The ruins tell the tale of the abbey’s varying fortunes; what survives are the atmospheric remains of the abbey church.
Creake Abbey probably had its origins in 1206 when Sir Robert and Lady Alice de Nerford established the small chapel of St Mary of the Meadows at Lingerescroft, bordering the tiny River Burn, which still flows through the farm and past the abbey today. In 1217 they founded the Hospital of St Bartholomew there and when the establishment embraced the rule of St Augustine the chapel became a priory, prompting extensions to both the church and priory buildings.
In 1225 Henry III elevated the priory to abbey status and it benefited from many generous donations. During this era the abbey thrived holding markets, sanctioned by the king, and providing fresh fruit and food to locals as well as herbal medicines. A fire around 1484 left the abbot petitioning the king for help. The abbey was drastically reduced in size, with arches and windows blocked. Then a terrible pestilence struck with the last abbot dying alone. In 1506 the lands at Creake Abbey were settled on Christ’s College Cambridge by Margaret Beaufort, grandmother of Henry VIII .” www.creakeabbey.co.uk/abbey-ruins
The Custom House was built in 1683 by Sir John Turner and designed by architect Henry Bell. It is described as "one of the most perfect buildings ever built". The building originally served as a merchant's exchange and a place to regulate trade through the port. It was used by Customs and Excise until 1989 and now houses the town's tourist information centre.
