Another look at the ‘Dark Hedges’ of County Antrim in Northern Ireland.

After being reminded of this scene by photos in that esteemed publication ‘Landscape Artist of the Year’ my comparison photos taken last June (22) still seemed to lack something that made it extra special. Of course my limited two visits during specific times and one of those with lots of tourist dictated my output. I guess the thing that was missing in mine was the lack of trees that used to be there but have been blown over by severe storms during the last few years leaving big gaps in places akin to missing teeth. Here is my attempt at showing the density and encapsulating feeing of this lane by using a long lens, and monotones. Ideally I would have liked the road to be more centralised but… we have what we have :) See Pips.

We are in the ‘Glenariff Forest Park’, County Antrim again. There are three sizable waterfall here on the river walkway, of which this, called ‘Ess-Na-Crub’ is perhaps the best one for getting up close and personal. See PiP for another one.

An old dwelling on a very quiet lane in County Antrim brings me to see this old gate. A long time since it was used no doubt and depicting a time when wrought-iron work was common place. Like the building next to it –long since abandoned. Notice the sheep enjoying the late afternoon sun.

For a part of the world known mostly for its history of strife and troubles, it sure is beautiful. Here we see the view just south of the ‘Giants Causeway’ looking back towards Portrush in the far distance.

The left side almost resembling a big spiders web but it presents no problem to us as we trek along the beach pebbles here at the western end of Balintoy. There were a lot of sheep around here so I presume this was to try to limit their straying.

Another day of exploring Northern Ireland brings us to this glen (valley). It is one of the nine Antrim Glens that cover over 1000 hectares of planted woodland, lakes and rivers. You can see from this view that we are not far away from the coast but quite a different feel here. A rocky gorge is the highlight of this trip with some beautiful waterfalls and timber walkways surrounded by mosses, liverworts and ferns. A sample of one of the waterfalls in the PiP.

After many shots of this harbour village area in stormy sea’s, here we see a much calmer scene. In the distance we see some cormorants drying their wings. I am not sure what this white rock was but it one of many types around here.

We see here a female Stonechat (Saxicola torquata) having caught a grub, probably for her young. I am almost at the spot where I captured the clifftop view of Ratlin Island’s east Lighthouse (PiP). The other side of this fence is a long drop to the sea rocks below.

Red Bay Castle

Yet another castle from me here. This is Red Bay Castle taken from the coast road heading south, just after the small town of Cushendall in County Antrim. I believe good views are to be had from there but only by trespassing!
The first castle here was built around the 13th century on an Anglo-Norman motte but the one we see here was built around 1652 after another from 1561 by Sir James McDonnell was burned to the ground, re-built, and then further destroyed by Cromwell in 1652. Yes a lot of history here. This ruin is only a small part of the original castle.

Raging Sea

A rather ‘painterly’ view of this raging sea down near the little harbour of Ballintoy. Just one of many shots here as the waves thundered into these rocks. Not a spot to neither slip into the water nor drop the lens cap but it sure was hypnotic.

Ratlin Island, East Lighthouse close-up

Another look at this Island lighthouse sat on top of a high headland. Operating since 1849, It had two unique features, twin lights and explosive charges instead of a fog-horn. Both these features have now been superseded but the main light is still in automatic operation. See PiP for high view.

An old window perhaps, in the walls of this ancient castle here in Northern Ireland. There is quite a long drop beyond the wall to the jagged rocks below and so this fence is very much needed here. This is the same viewpoint that I took the ‘White Rocks of Portrush’ from. See PiP’s.

Come and join me on a walk over the wild Ratlin Island situated some six miles from the mainland of County Antrim, Northern Island. Here on the east side we find one of the Islands two lighthouses. It was requested in 1827 but work did not start till twenty two years later. In 1995 it was finally converted to electric operation and the keeper withdrawn from the station.

We are on the West Strand Beach here, taking a stroll near the old harbour. This town has taken the initiative in trying to brighten up the place for families with this small fair with big ferris wheel. As can be seen though, it has a fine sandy safe beach facing west and an even bigger beach on the eastern side of town that if one walks for just a couple of miles would come to Dunluce castle. pip

Take your pick as to which bench to take here at Portrush, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The view away from the island view is just as extensive looking along the west coast.
The islands are ‘The Skerries’. Winkle Isle is the local name for the large Skerry island, the small Skerry being known as Castle Isle. The islands are part of an Area of Special Scientific Interest.

A startling vista from the inner walls of the castle showing the majestic white arches. The whole scene was bathed in a beautiful light as low cloud was gathering from the west. I have to admit that the coast of County Antrim came as a shock to me with such beauty as this. In the far distance one can see the town of Portrush.
