Usually, our peace is disturbed by a pair of Chinooks, on training exercises to a nearby specialist facility. The sound is very distinctive, I don't really need to look to confirm what I can hear - and frequently the landscape & trees obscure my line of sight. This time, there was a third "egg-beater / wokkah " tagging along ...

Training exercise at a nearby facility which has been going on for several days and probably the same two were visiting Carlisle Airport - to refuel ? - some time earlier.
There's also been a couple of Apache types buzzing about.

This low-flying helicopter just popped out from behind the row of trees, the weather is steadily getting worse as the cloud base drops down and the wind / rain increase. As often happens, I could hear him well before I saw him, but not sure who / what he is nor where he's going ...

A very hurried snap of a south(ish) bound chopper, so not really crisply foccused, sorry.
I could hear it, but spotting the flight path was another matter.
Good gliding weather with plenty of vertical development ie available lift under / in the cumulus clouds.

Playing "spot the 'chopper" in overcast conditions, with cloud low enough to be classed as a fog.
From the sound, almost certainly the local air ambulance, following the A69 / railway down in the Tyne Valley..

Noisy things flying past here are usually Hercules C-130sjets, or the air ambulance, so it was pleasant to see one of these for a change. [it is one of the RAF's SA330 "Puma" fleet]

Atlas, aka the A400M first flew 2009. A joint project by European members of NATO. Intended to be between the C-130 and C-17 for both load carrying and airstrip access.

Entered service with RAF in Nov 2014, as at 1st Dec 2020, there were 20 on the books and at least 2 more are on back order. I see (hear) them fairly often coming to practice low-flying tactics over nearby areas.

Image is in the standard silhouette style used for training in aircraft recognition.
