The Giant Green Anemone is found all along the Pacific coast of North America from California to Alaska. This example was photographed in the tidepools at Ruby Beach in Olympic National Park.

We've often found the Giant Green Anemone in large clusters in the tidepools along the Pacific coast of Washington, Oregon and California. These Anemones are closing as the tide recedes.

Purple Sea Star

Heading south along the Oregon coast the third day of our meanderings there, we spent a great deal of time at Cape Perpetua, exploring the tide pools, visiting the lighthouse and walking the beaches. We had looked for Starfish all along the way, but found few, likely the result of a huge die-off a few years ago. We finally found some north of the cape, this Purple Sea Star among them. These photos are of some of the creatures we photographed along the coast.

This worn Mussel sheel caught my attention on the beach at Cape Perpetua where we spent a great deal of time while meandering down the Oregon coast.

Harbor Seals are almost always present at Yaquina Head and we were not disappointed when we looked for them on the rocks below the headland. Their thick skins are sufficient protection, too, against the sharp-edged mussels that cover the rocks at tide level.

This Harbor Seal had come down off the rocks and was waiting, or so it seemed, for the waves to come and carry him away. He was photographed at Yaquina Head in Oregon.

Tide Pool

After walking around the headland at Yaquina Head Natural Area to see the seabirds and the lighthouse, we went down to the beach, itself a wonderful area of black granite cobbles, and explored the tide pools. The Purple Sea Urchins and the Giant Green Anemones were especially abundant. Yaquina Head is one of our favorite places on the Oregon coast and is near Newport.

At Arcadia Beach, our first stop along the Oregon coast, we explored the tide pools and found a lot of Anemones. These are the Giant Green Anemone and Aggregating Anemones.

Amargosa Pupfish

These are the Pupfish found in Longstreet Spring in Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Each spring has its own species of Pupfish, all tiny fish about 4 cm in length. The photo is not the best but trying to photograph these fish was a near impossible job.

The Aggregating Anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima. is very common on the Pacific Northwest coast. These were photographed in the tidepools at Rosario Beach on Fidalgo Island.

California Sea Lion

Several weeks ago we took a group of 6-8 graders on a camping trip to Deception Pass State Park. While there we went on the boat tour of Deception Pass and saw this Sea Lion jump up on the navigation buoy to sun himself. I thought the picture rather humorous since one of the Cormorants appears to be looking down to see what's going on as the buoy tips under the weight of the Sea Lion.

This photo was taken at Yaquina Head on the Oregon coast, designated an Outstanding Natural Area by the US Department of the Interior. It is not only a good place to see seals but also thousands of seabirds and even migrating whales. It also boasts a beautiful lighthouse, one of the more beautiful lights on the Oregon coast. The seals me remind of giant slugs when they are basking in the sun.

Sea Otters

While in Seward, Alaska, we went on a day cruise to parts of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. Just out side of Seward harbor we saw these Sea Otters. The photos are not as good as I would have hoped - we were still not adjusted to the movement of the boat - but I thought this was worth publishing anyway.

Sea Lions

Because our ferry trip was aborted due to mechanical problems we missed the part of the trip that would have taken us to areas where we would have seen some of the fjords and glaciers of southeast Alaska. We decided instead to take a glacier and wildlife cruise out of Seward and had a wonderful time, though the day was very dull and cloudy. We saw Sea Otters, Sea Lions, Humpback Whales, Orcas, a Gray Whale, Porpoises, a lot of seabirds and also visited Holgate Glacier. This photo taken somewhere near the outside of Resurrection Bay, is my wife's.

Sealion at Mermaid Rock

Taken on a whale-watching trip last summer (we saw whales as well). Mermaid Rock is a rock in Puget Sound where the Sea Lions gather and our boat stopped there briefly on our return trip.
