In the valley bottom runs the very nice River Wye and to the right is the village of Cressbrook with Water-Cum-Jolly Dale just a little further.
Its-time for us to stride down the narrow path and steps to the wooden footbridge across the river near the buildings on our right before taking the opposite bank of the river, back under the viaduct, along the grassy bank past an impressive weir and second footbridge before traversing uphill back to here and a little further to our car. Phew!
The Grade II listed viaduct built in 1863 is 91m long, 21m high with five 15m span arches and was built by the Midland Railway. It is now home to the Monsal Trail for walking and bicycles. There is also quite an impressive tunnel just out of sight: the Headstone tunnel is 487m long through which the trail runs. ~ Another phone panorama!

Looking South from the Lakeland fell of Latrigg, over the Cumbrian town of Keswick onto Derwent Water. The first Island just right of centre is Derwent Island. To its left seemingly touching the shore is Lord’s Island with Rampsholm Island on its top left corner and almost centre stage of the lake is St Herbert’s Island (naturally :) Latrigg is 368m asl.
A world famous bay that lies between Canada’s Nova Scotia and New Brunswick provinces, and touches the U.S. state of Maine. It’s known for its extremely high tidal range of about 16 metres (52ft) and thereby is the highest in the world. (The second highest in the world is in the Bristol Channel area where I was only a few months ago.)

This taken with my phone in panoramic mode. The first time I had used that handy mode after learning how on the bus to here! (My DSLR had decided to die on me minutes before taking this.)
Enjoy full screen

However we were not in luck for such light on the trees.
At almost the highest point a look to our right showed us the makings of a beautiful rainbow with the blackest sky imaginable. Whilst hiding from the coming onslaught of rain behind a wall, I ran off a few quick snaps being careful not to get my lens wet. Here is the result of two of the photos melded for this panoramic capture. Notice here what I had at first thought of, as a very dirty photo of noise/dirt spots on the lens or sensor but ‘no’ the lens was clean and dry, as was my sensor. So what are those white spots and streaks over the colours of the bow itself? In fact, it seems that the bright sun to my back as I took these into the black skies, lit up the fast rain droplets and that is that what we are seeing. Strangely, moments after taking these, the rainbow, rain and dark skies reverted to beautiful blue skies again (until we reached the golden trees then it went dull - of course.)
Enjoy full size.
Have a great weekend. Herb

We are looking on the main town here across the River Esk. You can see that it is fairly busy as people are trying to make the most of a C19 inter-lockdown gap. The foreground huts and shelters house the main fish market and if you look carefully you can clearly see the sign. In year past, there would not have been a gap to see the old quay, for the amount of fishing boats lined up to unload their daily catch –how things have changed. Fortunately, Whitby still does have part of its old fishing fleet and the market still thrives in normal conditions. The quayside here is lined with traditional shops and old Inns as well as a few fish ‘n’ chip shops. The statue of its adopted hero Captain James Cook and also the iconic Whalebone arch stand just right (out of picture) of the green grass area on the centre right. See Pips.
Whitby harbour is protected by a pair of piers set in a claw-like shape by which the River Esk escapes into the North Sea.
The two piers in Whitby have been in existence since before the 1500's. By 1540, the two oak piers (east and west) were replaced partially, with stonework (in the reign of King Charles 1), with further work around the 1600’s. Both piers were rebuilt in 1735, each measuring approximately 183m, but by 1814 the west pier was further extended to reach a length of 309m. In 1905, both the piers had new pier ends built on, each of a length of 152m. In Feb 2020 a new footbridge was constructed on the east pier to link the main pier to its the wooden extension. (Seen on here in white.)
This 180° view is made from a stitch of 4x 6000x4000 landscape photos before reduction for Ipernity upload.
