Der Abschnitt der Wakenitz entlang der früheren innerdeutschen Grenze wird seit jeher Langer Jammer genannt, weil er so schmal ist, dass kaum aufgekreuzt und wegen der zugewachsenen Ufer auch nicht getreidelt werden konnte.

The stretch of Wakenitz river along the former inner-German border has long been called Langer Jammer (long lament) because it's too narrow to sail against the wind and the shoreline is unsuitble for towing.

Trees at Wakenitz. this stretch of the river used to demarcate the border between West and East Germany and therefore still is in its natural state ( Wakenitz is sometimes called the Amazon of the North).

St. Marien (1277-1351 erbaut) wird als Mutterkirche der Backsteingotik bezeichnet. Nach der fast vollständigen Zerstörung im Feuersturm am 28./29.03.1942 wurde 1947 mt der Rekonstruktion begonnen. Hier der Blick ins Mittelschiff mit dem weltweit höchsten Backsteingewölbe (38,5m).

St. Mary's church in Lübeck was built from 1277-1351 and is called the mother church of brick gothic. The nave has the world's highest brick vault at 38,5 m. After near total destruction in the firestorm of March 1942 reconstruction started in 1947.

St. Jakobi ist die Seefahrerkirche der Hansestadt Lübeck. Sie beherbergt die Gedenkstätte für den 1957 gesunkenen Großsegler Pamir mit dem beschädigten hölzernen Rettungsboot 2. Von 86 Mann Besatzung überlebten nur 6, die meisten der Toten waren Kadetten zwischen 16 und 18 Jahren.

St. Jakobi in Lübeck is the Hanse town's seaman's church. It houses the Pamir memorial with the damaged wooden lifeboat Nr.2. The Pamir was a 4 mast barque which sank in 1957 off the Azores. Only 6 of the 86 crew survived, most of the dead were 16-18 year old cadets.
