Sheep Islands

The reason for posting this image: the name Føroyar (Faroe Islands) is derived from old Norse and means Sheep Islands, a name given by the Viking age settlers.
Maybe it will be the last of this serie, so a homage to sheep was due! :-)

Saksun (14 inhabitants) is located at the end of what was once a narrow fjord with high mountains on both sides.In the fjord, at the foot of the village, there is now a lagoon.At low tide, it is possible to walk along the sandy shore of the lagoon around the headland.

Named after the Norse god Thor , Tórshavn is one of the world’s smallest capitals, although over a third of the Faroese live there.The Norse established their parliament on the Tinganes peninsula in AD 850.Tórshavn thus became the capital of the Faroe Islands and has remained so ever since.
The weather was amazingly good when we were there.

Accordind to the legend the two distant sea stacks Risin & Kellingin (Giant and Witch) are fossils of an old woman and giant who tried to drag the Faroe Islands back to Iceland. The rising sun suprised them and they were turned into stone.

About 70 people live in Funningur on both sides of a cascading stream in a compact cluster of houses around a small bay. The wooden turf-roofed church stands at the water's edge.

Gjógv ( literally: gorge) is a village located on the northeast tip of the island of Eysturoy, in the Faroe Islands .
The village was named after a 200-metre long sea-filled gorge that runs north to the sea from the village.
I had a great time there, walking up and down steep slopes leading to mossy cliffs, inhabited by birds only...

Mykines is the westernmost of the 18 main islands of the Faroes. It has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because of its significance as a breeding site for seabirds,among which Atlantic puffins.

The Faroe Islands is a North Atlantic archipelago 320 kilometres northwest of Scotland, and about halfway between Norway and Iceland. It is an autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Their total area is about 1,400 square kilometres with a population of 51,783 . (from Wikipedia)

I spent a week on these amazingly beautiful islands . Vagar is the name of the island, Mulafossur the one of the fall.
