The spectacular granite outcrops of the Seychelles Islands in the central Indian Ocean were amongst the earliest examples cited by Alfred Wegener as evidence for his continental drift theory.[1] Ridge-plume interactions have been responsible for separating a thinned continental sliver from a large continent (India).[2]

The granites of the Seychelles microcontinent were emplaced 750 Ma, during the late Precambrian.[3][4][5][6] Thermally-induced rifting in the Somali Basin and transform rifting along the Davie fracture zone began in the late Permian 225 million years ago, with Gondwana supercontinent beginning to break up in the mid-Jurassic (about 167 million years ago) when East Gondwana, comprising Antarctica, Madagascar, India, and Australia, began to separate from Africa; East Gondwana then began to separate about 115-120 million years ago when India began to move northward.[5] The Seychelles then underwent two more stages of rifting to isolate it from Madagascar and India. Between 84-95 million years ago rifting separated Seychelles/India from Madagascar.

The Granitic Seychelles are the islands
which lie in central position on the Seychelles Bank and are composed of granite rock. They make up the majority of the Inner Islands.

There are mafic xenolith intrusions in the granite in some areas. The Granitic Seychelles are fragments of the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, and have been separated from other continents for 75 million years. The Granitic Seychelles form the northernmost part of the Mascarene Plateau.

Le cocotier de mer ou coco de mer (Lodoicea maldivica) est un palmier (famille des Arécacées) originaire des Seychelles, qui produit la plus grosse graine du monde.
C'est un cocotier dont la noix est surnommée coco-fesses et peut faire une vingtaine de kilogrammes.

Les tortues marines sont les tortues de la superfamille des Chelonioidea1. Elles sont présentes dans tous les océans du monde à l'exception de l'océan Arctique.

Ces espèces sont toutes vulnérables ou menacées. Elles font localement l'objet de protection ou de plan de restauration, mais la pollution, le braconnage et les prises accidentelles par engins de pêche restent des causes préoccupantes de recul de populations, déjà très relictuelles2.
