The first record of the Whitby Abbey steps comes from 1340, but they’re believed to be even older. The steps were originally made from wood. It was not until 1774 that the original wooden steps were replaced with stone from Sneaton.

It is thought the 199 steps were used as a test of Christian faith to those who wished to worship in St Mary’s Church. Climbing the steps would prove that you were faithful. Anyone who has climbed them recently knows how testing they can be!

Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps.

Whitby Piers lie east and west of the harbour mouth, designed to protect the harbour from flooding. There has been some form of protection at the mouth of the River Esk since as early as the 1300s. Today, the piers are a favourite spot for local fishermen and amateur photographers.
Watching the sun set into the sea is one of our favourite things to do from the Whitby piers.

The West Pier was completed in 1831 with its elegant 75 foot high lighthouse finishing off a grand promenade extending from the bridge.

Trinity House, a charity dedicated to the safeguarding of seafarers, built the Whitby Lighthouse in 1858. It was designed by an engineer named James Walker as a pair of towers with fixed lights, which became automated in 1992 and now stands as a singular tower.
The lighthouse stands at 13meteres tall with a range light of 18NM.

Whitby Lifeboat Station is a Royal National Lifeboat Institution RNLI lifeboat station located in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. It is one of nine situated along the Yorkshire coast and is home to both an All-Weather Lifeboat and an Inshore Lifeboat.
