We will be leaving in less than a month for our annual hiking and backpacking vacation with our oldest daughter. Last year we went to Big Bend National Park and San Antonio, Texas. This year we are going to Utah, to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

When in San Antonio we rented bikes and did the ten-mile Mission Trail, a paved trail along the San Antonio River that begins at the Alamo and visits five old Spanish missions along the river. This was the last of them, Mission San Francisco de la Espada.

This was our last view of Mission Espada from some of the ruined outbuildings. Espada was the fifth and last of the old Spanish Missions along the San Antonio River in San Antonio, Texas we visited while biking the Mission Trail.

The last few days of our recent trip were spent in San Antonio, Texas, where we biked the Mission Trail, a ten mile paved trail which follows the San Antonio River to five old Spanish missions. It was hot but we had a great day which we ended with a wonderful dinner at a riverfront restaurant in downtown San Antonio. This is the last of the missions we visited, Mission San Juan Capistrano, still used as a church by the Roman Catholic community. The lady is my wife.

Mission San Juan Capistrano is one of five old Spanish missions along the San Antonio River. We were in San Antonio on our recent trip and biked the ten mile Mission Trail.

The original name of this Spanish mission, established in 1718, was San Antonio de Valero, but it became known as the Alamo or the Cottonwoods. It was here that the battle of the Alamo was fought on March 6, 1836.
