An early demise for many of our plants after months of little or no rain. We here in the NW of England would normally have one of the nations most persistent yearly rainfalls things are still tinderbox dry, as could be witnesses last night by the first real National Alarm that was broadcast automatically through everybodies mobile phone warning of wildfires and dangers to life. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Here we see my first attempt at close-up with my Lumix 1000. Does it do the job?&lt;br /&gt;

    <title>HFF ~   A Loch Morar pier</title>

It seemed a miserable broody stretch of water then but what a difference today. This is one of a number of piers along its 18.8 km (11.7 miles) length and this photo belies its incredible depth of  310 m (1017 ft) making it the deepest in the UK and 17th deepest in the word. It has a surface area of 26.7 sq km (10.3 miles).  (The deepest Sea loch is Loch Etive which is only 145 m deep (176ft). &lt;br /&gt;
Although there are some boats moored here, in the hours walking I only saw one moving across the water.   See PiP for Loch church&lt;br /&gt;

Top left:  a juvenile female  (I did wonder if this was the adult female -mother but...) - feeding and watching over young.&lt;br /&gt;
Top right:  male fledgling hoping that mummy or daddy would bring it some food.&lt;br /&gt;
Bottom left:  female fledgling hiding itself from danger and again waiting for food to come. &lt;br /&gt;
Bottom right:  the father? – pecking berries on the fruit trees overhead but we never did see it bring any to the young.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Cornwall is well known for its rugged coastal scenery but this proves that looking inland is just as interesting. Whereas we here in the north of England have field boundaries made of stone, Cornwall has natural green hedges but we both share grazing sheep.&lt;br /&gt;

We are near the old Smarldale bridge over the river here which is our turning point before heading back to the viaduct via the old railway line.&lt;br /&gt;
Just past the viaduct the deep gill is heavily wooded and host lots of natural history specimens including many butterflies, reptiles, birds and flowers.  Sadly we did not have time to explore that part.&lt;br /&gt;
The river is Scandal Beck.&lt;br /&gt;

At 258m ASL , not the highest mountain in Britain but it’s still an impressive hill. We have an old ruined house to add interest and also a fence to lead part of the way up to this very popular rock climbing destination. An old fort also sits high up there. Interestingly, around 1% of the entire British Cormorant population nest on the rock but there is a wide range array of other nesting birds too –hence the name.  It is about 5 miles from the sea.&lt;br /&gt;
