Our garden plants, trees and grasses all takes their toll of this years hot drought conditions. An early demise for many of our plants after months of little or no rain. We here in the NW of England would normally have one of the nations most persistent yearly rainfalls things are still tinderbox dry, as could be witnesses last night by the first real National Alarm that was broadcast automatically through everybodies mobile phone warning of wildfires and dangers to life.

Here we see my first attempt at close-up with my Lumix 1000. Does it do the job?

HFF ~ A Loch Morar pier

We walked along this Loch side many years ago in rain and very grey weather. It seemed a miserable broody stretch of water then but what a difference today. This is one of a number of piers along its 18.8 km (11.7 miles) length and this photo belies its incredible depth of 310 m (1017 ft) making it the deepest in the UK and 17th deepest in the word. It has a surface area of 26.7 sq km (10.3 miles). (The deepest Sea loch is Loch Etive which is only 145 m deep (176ft).
Although there are some boats moored here, in the hours walking I only saw one moving across the water. See PiP for Loch church

A family snapshot of our garden blackbirds all taken within the same ten minutes.
Top left: a juvenile female (I did wonder if this was the adult female -mother but...) - feeding and watching over young.
Top right: male fledgling hoping that mummy or daddy would bring it some food.
Bottom left: female fledgling hiding itself from danger and again waiting for food to come.
Bottom right: the father? – pecking berries on the fruit trees overhead but we never did see it bring any to the young.

A Cornish landscape

Another photo from our August 2010 trip to Cornwall. Cornwall is well known for its rugged coastal scenery but this proves that looking inland is just as interesting. Whereas we here in the north of England have field boundaries made of stone, Cornwall has natural green hedges but we both share grazing sheep.

Smardale Gill

Described as ‘A gem of a nature reserve’ this lower walk along both sides of the valley was a most memorable pleasure. We are near the old Smarldale bridge over the river here which is our turning point before heading back to the viaduct via the old railway line.
Just past the viaduct the deep gill is heavily wooded and host lots of natural history specimens including many butterflies, reptiles, birds and flowers. Sadly we did not have time to explore that part.
The river is Scandal Beck.

The lighthouse from sea/ground level is an impressive sight even from this distance. The rocks I am stood on are twice a day covered by the sea.

St Brelade's Bay, Jersey

A short visit to this small part of southern Jersey shows us one of the many magnificent beaches of the Island. A great place for safe sunbathing with the family or simply a nice walk with golden sand in our toes. We are looking west here and if not for the outcrop of land we might even see the Islands capital St Helier. The resort also has a most wonderful short promenade and historic church.

The PiP shows the opposite direction.

A walk in my local park gives me an opportunity to capture this splendid plant. It is a a lax medium-sized evergreen shrub with slender arching branches clothed with narrow, rather stiff leaves, and bearing bright crimson bottlebrush-like flower spikes 15cm in length near the shoot tips.

Another look from the Shawl at Leyburn. A big wide valley with quite a lot to look at. This bench was very popular in the warm sun as we passed it again later.

We are near the village of Reeth here at the end of a splendid round walk. These barns are almost a trade-mark of the area and this one shows the state of many which are at the end of their life.

Having left Durness and its locality we head east to the Kyle of Tongue. On the way we see remnants of its history and gaze at the mountainous backdrop of Ben Loyal, a Corbett of 764m.

Another impressive peak here in the county of Gwynedd, Wales. At 258m ASL , not the highest mountain in Britain but it’s still an impressive hill. We have an old ruined house to add interest and also a fence to lead part of the way up to this very popular rock climbing destination. An old fort also sits high up there. Interestingly, around 1% of the entire British Cormorant population nest on the rock but there is a wide range array of other nesting birds too –hence the name. It is about 5 miles from the sea.

Having walked up to the lake here (see PiP) we look down from this highpoint northwards into the surrounding hills towards Trum Gelli. The last photo shows a closeup view of the farmstead below.

Located just East of Tywyn in Wales.

An Afon Mawddach vista

We are high above Barmouth here looking north west down this Mawdach tidal river estuary towards Dolgellau. We also see some of the heights of the southern Snowdonia mountain range besides Cardair Idris itself.
