Figures with Hooded Cloaks - This carved stone was found in a building in the vicus (civilian settlement outside the fort walls). It depicts the genii cucullati, three spirits wearing hooded cloaks. These deities were commonly worshipped across northern Europe.

Fortuna, the Roman goddess of good fortune was usually shown with a ship's rudder and a cornucopia full of food and flowers. The rudder meant that she would steer people safely home and the cornucopia showed that the goddess would bring good things to her worshippers.
This white marble figure is from the Mediterranean (on loan from the British Museum).

Large Tombstone - this was rescued from Hexham Abbey and belongs to a Roman soldier of the rank of standard-bearer, who was killed at the age of twenty-five and buried at Corstopitum (Corbridge).

It represents a mounted soldier riding over a prostrate barbarian. The soldier is well armed, wears a helmet with high crest and plume, and round his neck is a torque, which indicates his high rank. In his right hand he carries the standard which displays the sun god, Sol, in a circle. The long sword is sheathed, and no other weapon is seen.

The barbarian is naked, and carries a large oval shield by a strap with his left arm, while his right hand grasps a short leaf-shaped sword of strikingly different form to that worn by his conqueror.

Below the sculpture is the inscription :

STIP. VII. H. S.

" To the shades of the departed to Flavinus standard-bearer of the cavalry of Petriana of the white troop, twenty-five years of age and seven years' service is laid here."

This marble head from a statue of a woman probably represents 'Germania', a personification of conquered German tribes. Her loose flowing hair is unlike any of the carefully dressed styles worn by Roman women and this would make her easily recognisable as a 'barbarian'.

Burial chest of Titus Valerius Secundus, son of Titus, a soldier in the 7th praetorian cohort in the century of Severus. His home was in Liguria. He served for eight years and was a 'stationarius' at Ephesus. He lived for 26 years and 6 months.

The Roman forts in Britain were usually built by the Legions. But evidence from an inscribed dedication slab on a granary building at Benwell (Condercum) states that the men of the British Navy built this. Roman marines were famed for their specialist engineering skills - which they brought to bear in Roman Newcastle for the Emperor Hadrian.
The slab was thus:

This is the reconstructed tombstone of Gaius Julius Alpinus Classicianus. His name shows him to have been a member of the Gallic aristocracy, but we know more about him from the Roman historian Tacitus (Annals XIV 38-39), an unusual instance where we can link a documented person to a burial monument. Nero (reigned AD 54-68) appointed Classsicianus as the procurator (finance minister) of Britain after the revolt of the Iceni led by Queen Boudica in AD 60-61. His job was to correct the financial abuses that had been an important cause of the rebellion.

In late Roman times (fourth century AD), pieces of the tombstone were re-used in the hurried construction of one of the bastions that protected the walls of Roman London. The first surviving pieces came to light in 1852; further sections were discovered in 1885, when an underground railway was cut through the site, and in 1935.
