We are at the Hartlepool National Museum of Royal Navy here, aboard Britain’s oldest warship still afloat. It is a historic 19th-century Leda-class sailing frigate, built in Bombay, India, in 1817. This space features traditional wooden deck planking, stern windows overlooking the quarter gallery, and period-style furnishings used to recreate the living quarters of a Georgian-era naval captain.

As we walked through the deer park of the castle (Bishops Palace) we climb a hill to discover the old Deer House. Described as a rare and well preserved example of Gothic Revival architecture built around 1760. In those days numerous deer roamed the grounds and this building provided a feeding place and shelter for the deer and rooms for the Bishops guest to rest and enjoy a picnic.

One cannot imagine ‘The Small Isle’s in the Inner Hebrides being quite like this. High rugged peaks and green forest. I am on a small valley trail here which if followed entirely would lead to the top of those peaks, but not for me this time. Fortunately, someone has given some thoughts to the hiker here by providing a place of rest to admire the stunning Rum scenery.

Bishop Auckland, County Durham: As we sit in our latest holiday home on our first evening and watch the oncoming sunset, suddenly we have rain and a splendid rainbow. Both rain and rainbow lasted only a minute or two but long enough for a quick snap as can be seen here. You can see that practically all the grass now is a dry burned yellow after weeks of heat and no rainfall. The loose stone was preparation work for an installation of a hot-tub! (it was not installed however whilst we were there –boo hoo!)

The archipelago of The Small Isles consist of the Isles of Rum, Eigg, Canna and Muck. So here we are on the largest of them; Rum, and one very soon realises why it is a National Nature Reserve. Its permanent population is around 31 people (2022) living in and around the village of Kinloch.
This photo is taken just beyond Kinloch and looks NE to show part of the Isle of Skye from the Rum Inlet.

The tiny village of Arisaig is only about 8 miles (11km) from Mallaig and is a favourite place for outdoor enthusiast and explorers as it sits on the scenic Road to the isles. As can be seen it has wonderful views to the Small Isles and one can take a small boat to them from here.

Seen on the shoreline of Brancaster Staithe in Norfolk. No doubt a spot that many people sat and gazed towards the sand and sea seen here. The plaque actually has the words inscribed above.

HBM ~ A seat upon high
This welcome seat just below the hilltop castle of Dinas Bran enjoys great views. How long it has been here, who knows? A nice cool breeze is to be had here to cool us down after the climb so far but that breeze can turn, no doubt to a freezing gale at times, and not only in winter.
The view here is part of the panoramic walk belonging to the mountain called Creigiau Eglwyseg (455 m). This is a landscape of prehistoric cairns and archaeological sites dating from the Bronze Age. We actually did a lot of that walk on our last visit here in 2017 but now our age interferes with a present adventure. See PiP

I know the feeling, after just returning from my holiday here in Scotland. This was taken in the village of Tarbet on Loch Lomond just minutes after we arrived for our overnight stopover en-route to the North West coast.

The courtyard to Erdigg Hall is where one can indulge in a piece of cake and coffee from the small café or perhaps eat your picnic. We went from here to tour the hall itself with the gardens; afterwards this courtyard was full of people drinking and eating

Weeks of torrential rain raises the water level here above the usual shore line, so making the seating here rather problematic. In spite of that, the views are still intriguing and rather satisfying.
In the distance we gat a glimpse of The Langdale Pikes one of the Lake District’s most iconic ranges.

A rare few hours of blue sky and sunshine brings us back to Dunham Massey to see the first snowdrops of the year. The good weather, albeit being cold, brings out many visitors here all clamouring for a bit of natures colour before the promised snows and rains returned just hours later.
