May I wish a Happy Bench Monday to everyone. This bench represents the Year of the Sugar Gums 2009. Who knew that Sugar Gums even merited a weekend, never mind a whole year? Still, it's a nice bench underneath the trees in this park in Guildford, WA.

I saw three ships come sailing in …

Three very different vessels in Fremantle Inner Harbour: the container ship MSC Ajaccio; the cruise liner Norwegian Spirit and the tug Svitzer Falcon.

The cruise ship had just come into the Inner Harbour and was being manoeuvred by the tug. The Inner Harbour is quite wide, enough to turn this 300 metre long ship with ease and then push it to the dock for disembarkation.

The container vessel MSC Ajaccio is one of four or five that were loading or unloading at the dockside wharves, some were container ships, others were bulk carriers.

My wife (She, Who Must Be Obeyed) got it into her head to go and see a large cruise ship come into the harbour and be pushed around by tugs, so we went to see the Norwegian Spirit enter between 5 and 8 a.m.; then we saw it that same night leaving on the next leg of its journey from Singapore to Sydney. She (my wife) has already broached the idea of seeing another ship come in. Sigh … Yes, dear …

(By the by, as I typed this description, the auto-correct changed ‘cruise ship’ to ‘curse ship’. I wondered whether to leave it like that but thought that might appear impolite.)

The pond is fleeting, the result of rainfall over the past week. Normally it is a small, transient pool of water which gradually disappears as the heat of summer - Birak and Bunuru - bakes the land. These ducks have taken advantage of the rain.

There are a few of these benches in the Dolphin Quay precinct, all with different illustrations, all mirroring the marina and the water which is such a major part of the city of Mandurah.

Stingray Wharf, Mandurah.

Not the best photo, I'm afraid. The scene was some distance from me and I was shaky having run/walked some distance on an increasingly hot morning, plus my iPhone skills are rather rudimentary.

The bird on the right is, of course, an Australian pelican; the one on the left is, I think, a Nankeen heron (sometimes called a night heron in these parts). I took this and walked on ... They were all still there, in more or less the same positions when I passed by 45 minutes later on my return journey. Now THAT is patience. I hope they were all rewarded by a feed from the estuary waters.

Gosh, I love this land.
