Friday 27 February 2026 (1106) – In December 2025 another autonomous vehicle trial commenced in the Cambridge area organised by the Greater Cambridge Partnership which uses the ‘Connector’ name.

This latest trial is also operated by Whippet Coaches and links the Park and Ride sites at Trumpington and at Babraham Road travelling through the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, home of two major hospitals and to of a number of medical research facilities. Four round trips run Mondays to Fridays departing Trumpington at 0930, 1030, 1200 and 1300 which return from Babraham Road thirty minutes later.

YY74 MWF, an Alexander Dennis E100EV first registered in February 2025, and was seen approaching Addenbrooke’s Hospital working the 1100 trip from Babraham Road to Trumpington.

A second similar vehicle is used on the trial registered YY74 MWE.

YY74 MWF, an Alexander Dennis E100EV first registered in February 2025, and was seen entering the grounds of Addenbrooke’s Hospital working the 1100 trip from Babraham Road to Trumpington.

A second similar vehicle is used on the trial registered YY74 MWE.

This instruction was seen on board YY74 MWE.

Wednesday 25 June 2025 – The second phase of the Greater Cambridge Partnership ‘Connector’ autonomous bus trial saw the launch of a timetabled public service on 24 June 2025.

The circular service operates from the Madingley Road Park & Ride site travelling via Eddington and the Cambridge West Campus of the University of Cambridge and has four trips in the morning peak and four in the afternoon peak. (Departures are at 0730, 0800, 0830 and 0900 then 1530, 1600, 1630 and 1700 with the circular taking 18 minutes).

No traditional bus timetable was on display (revolutionary?) on this board at Madingley Road. To see a timetable a person has to have access to a mobile phone with the ability to scan and read QR codes. I suppose many people have phones with this facility these days - but not all do!

Traveller’s feedback is invited by the scanning of a QR code to access an on-line survey.

The circular service operates from the Madingley Road Park & Ride site travelling via Eddington and the Cambridge West Campus of the University of Cambridge and has four trips in the morning peak and four in the afternoon peak. (Departures are at 0730, 0800, 0830 and 0900 then 1530, 1600, 1630 and 1700 with the circular taking 18 minutes).

The vehicle employed is SJ71 HRM, a Mellor Orion E bodied Fiat Ducato 15 seat electric bus, which is operated by Whippet Coaches Limited, one of the partners in the trial. It was new in September 2021 and initially operated in the Didcot area of Oxfordshire with First Bus owned Beeline as their number 59200.

The driver’s cab area of SJ71 HRM of the vehicle employed, a Mellor Orion E bodied Fiat Ducato 15 seat electric bus, which is operated by Whippet Coaches Limited, one of the partners in the trial. Whippet has operated full sized electric buses in partnership with the University of Cambridge between the West Cambridge campus and the Biomedical Campus since September 2023.

The vehicle was new in September 2021 and initially operated in the Didcot area of Oxfordshire with First Bus owned Beeline as their number 59200.
