This was the only one of several to stay still long enough for me to capture an image, but with the wings closed. I did see several in the open posture, but fliting about too quickly for my camera or my reactions. Seen whilst walking around Horsey Mere.

After a bit of a search, I think this is probably a Drinker [moth] caterpillar.

Male Emperor moth [Saturnia pavonia], sadly deceased. [the grid is 5mm squares].
However, it is a splendid example, note the branched antenna and prominent eye-spots.
Found in the garden after a very cold night, it was not actually frosty, but close enough.
{apparently, the female has smooth antenna, and although there are eye spots, her colouration would be far greyer, almost monotone}.

Drinker Moth caterpillar [Euthrix potatoria] found walking in a not especially sensible place ... after taking the picture the caterpillar was re-located to somewhere far more suitable.
This moth's common name is derived from the supposed fact that the caterpillars drink drops of dew from blades of grass.

Whatever the plant is [?] - I was cutting it out from in & behind one of my rosa rugosa bushes, when I found this caterpillar ... after photographing it, I found another example of said weed to put it onto ...

First time I've seen one of these, sadly, I think that this one has lost some wing length to a bird.
{I released it after taking this image, and it flew - rather badly - some distance away before I lost sight of it}

Drinker moth, Euthrix potatoria caterpillar :- It is probably about to pupate, given how lethargic it was, and especially with darkened colouration.
Released to some nice long grass that isn't going to be cut ...

wingspan = 19mm, which is less than the 30 to 32 I was expecting.
Based on the underside pattern, I think this is an example of a Lead Belle [Scotopteryx mucronata], or possibly the very similar July Belle [S. luridata].

Having looked at the comparison images on that Wiki page, N.pronuba is the most likely identification. However, it seems a little small, even under the glass that was used to catch it. After capturing the image it was released back outside.
