The lamp post provides support to a collection of different signs. Working upwards is the Zipper timetable case, a no dog fouling sign, a Zipper bus stop, a fire hydrant sign and the way up high is a bus stop from an earlier era.

Aldreth is surrounded by flat agricultural farmland and the many watercourses on the landscape create obstacles to travel so much so that access to the village is really only via one standard sized road from Haddenham 1.5 miles/2.4km to the north. There is a secondary route although that is via what is only a Fenland drove not much wider than a large car.

The ‘Ely Zipper 1’ circular service runs Mondays to Saturdays starting at Ely (Market Street) travelling to Witcham, Haddenham, Wilburton, Stretham and Little Thetford returning to Market Street – a journey of 55 minutes. There are five full anti-clockwise journeys in the morning plus the first journey of the day which starts from Witcham. In the afternoon there are four full clockwise journeys plus the last journey of the day terminating at Witcham.

However, Aldreth is only served by the 0930 and 1330 trips on Thursdays which is market day in Ely.

The bus is a Wrightbus StreetLite DF that had been new to Passenger Plus, Tadworth, Surrey in February 2019. Acquired by Dew’s in May 2023. I found it to be a rather bumpy and noisy bus!

The photograph was taken from outside the Budgens Store in St. Andrew’s Street. The store later became Sainsbury’s for a time (before their larger store was built nearby) then later still became Wilko and then B&M). A travelling fishmonger regularly traded on the forecourt and she was just setting up in readiness for the shoppers to appear.

Eastern Counties Omnibus Company Limited VR206 (XNG 206S) was just leaving as it worked the 0858 service 155 from West Row to Bury St. Edmunds (departing King Street at 0924) which travelled via Barton Mills, Ickingham, Lackford, Hengrave, Fornham All Saints and Fornham St. Martin.

Premier Travel Services Limited 378 (G378 REG), a Plaxton Expressliner bodied Volvo B10M new in February 1990, was working the 0800 National Express service 747 from Norwich to Bristol due from here at 0935. It was stopped at the kerbside because the layby was occupied by two ECOC VR double deckers when the coach arrived. VR 206 was now on its way but the second VR (VR194) is still in the lay-by barely visible beyond the coach.
