Remains of a part privately erected telephone line. One insulated wire and earth return creates the circuit between the exchange and the phone. Mouse over to see the note. Click on photo to enlarge. This technology was used to provide telephone service to remote places in the days of manual (magneto) telephone exchanges.

This is just North of the Moomba - Sydney pipeline ROW near 'The Cottage' site in an area South West of Cobar NSW.

The above ground access to the ethane pipeline at The Cottage site. The 8 inch ethane pipe was provided in the 1990s.

I first found out about the ethane pipeline when pegging a site for a railways radio hut at the location below. I met two men who were marking the route for the pipe. Their route would have gone right under the middle of the optimal location for the hut. I relocated the hut and saved both organisations a huge headache later. We went through their maps and found there were no other conflicts.

A comms and control hut at a pipeline monitoring site. Satellite comms has replaced a dedicated terrestrial radio bearer.

The Cottage, a radiocommunication site for the Moomba - Sydney gas pipeline, SW of Cobar NSW. The original pipeline comms has been replaced by satellite comms in the beige hut with the dish. These pipeline sites are used by Telstra to locate mobile phone basestations in some remote areas.

The tower and yellow hut were provided for a microwave link for monitoring and control, and two-way comms, for a natural gas pipeline in the 1970s. The green hut was provided for mobile phone comms in the late 1990s, originally with CDMA and now Telstra's 3G system. The pipeline's comms are now done by satellite using the white huts. January 2007.
