Pier between Arch Two & Arch Three.

Was difficult to tell with poor lighting, but my suspicion is the the void now extends to, or almost to the stonework foundations of the pier.

I may be able to persuade someone to examine this in more detail.

Not quite as deep as in 2025, but definitely extends further widthways ---
again, pointing out the rusty gabion wires, and how little remains of the remaining concrete "roof".

5ft ranging pole - that wasn't the deepest point, just where I was able to rest it safely. You can gauge how little of the surface layer is left, over a drop of 4feet or more onto an unstable pile of cobbles and pebbles.

Having found somewhere to stand - looking upstream under Arch Two.
All three of these big holes in the surface connect into the massive void underneath - much wider than it was.
Note also, that the surface concrete is very thin in places.

Now exposed, the gabions used to hold rocks for filing the voids / providing a "hardcore" foundation for the concrete surface layer.
Decidedly rusty remains, with sharp points.

Another view, with ranging pole, of the main voids under Arch Two - now linked up.

Admittedly this isn't quite as deep as it was, but it seems much larger in extent.

A void, about a foot (30cm) high and extending to almost the full length of my ranging pole - so 5ft or thereabouts - has developed to the upstream side of the timber piling / weir.

Larger void - to the downstream side of Arch One.

A longer length of the timber piling [previous weir ?] is now exposed, and the void extends towards the camera's POV, as some of the concrete "capping" has gone.

Evidence of past repairs [the aggregate in the concrete is of a visibly different colour] and the shape suggests a filled void.

General overview from the north bank.
The black shapes are some of the openings to extensive voids under the concrete layer, visible in the low flow conditions.
I would say that the damage is more severe than was visible in 2025.
Most erosion is under Arch two.

Chunks of ice among the rocks poking up out of the River South Tyne, just downstream from the Alston Arches. Not a lot of water flowing in the river today, as it hasn't rained much for a few days.

Ice waterfall over the weir in the River South Tyne, underneath the Alston Arches.
It looks like there may be a very thin sprinkling of snow over the top, but I don't think I can see any "pancake ice" twirling around.

There might be a little bit of snow on there, but the ice is hiding some massive holes. No sign of any pancake ice ...
