Research indicates that this is Helophilus pendulas, also know as a "sun fly" from their habit of basking in sunlight, explains how I got close enough for this photograph !

Went back to check on the flowering plant, to see if I could make an identification. I think it is an Erysimum species, by the flower, the leaves are somewhat hairy ... there has been quite a patch of them in that area. Probably a garden escape, originally. The patch has had a long flowering season, producing largely white, or very pale pink flowers, with some strongly scented.

These two were busy making more ladybugs when I found them ... after they had finished, I took some images, this was the best one, and then released them back into the area where I found them.

[Calvia 14-guttata] Cream-spot Ladybird - eats aphids, mainly on trees and shrubs.

First time I've actually got one of these on camera, I wasn't sure if I remembered seeing them in real life before today, or just in photographs.

These two cream-spot ladybirds are somewhat too busy, making more ladybirds.
I put them back outside after a few more minutes - they very vulnerable at this time, so a little extra protection is no bad thing.

Actually, this was the first one I have ever seen - they make a very distinctive burring noise in flight and are attracted to lights from the tree tops. After taking some images I let it back out of the window.

Emperor dragonfly [Anax imperator] laying eggs on what I think is Potamogeton gramineus [various-leaved pondweed] in a large pond in Norfolk.

I had been trying [and failing] to capture images of either the very territorial male dragonfly or the female flying above the pond. Finally, I managed this image and cropped it "in camera".
