These are the flowers of Sweet Acacia, a shrub native to the American southwest, photographed in the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge near the Salton Sea in southern California.

Tamarisk ramosissimus or Saltcedar is a common shrub in the southwestern deserts of the USA, but an invasive and noxious species. These flowers were photographed at the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge on the south end of the Salton Sea.

Because we were traveling in January we saw very few wildflowers anywhere. These were among the few we saw in Joshua Tree National Park, and this was the only plant of the species we found in bloom. It is Phacelia campanularia, The plant itself has a foul smell and we learned later can cause a skin rash.

This was one of the few wildflowers we saw on our trip and it was blooming everywhere in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California. It is the shrubby Chuparosa, a favorite of hummingbirds.

Also photographed at Fortynine Palms Oasis in Joshua Tree National Park, this shrub is, I believe, the Bladder pod Bush, Cleome isomeris.

This year was a very poor year for wildflowers in the desert southwest. Nevertheless we saw many different varieties and found enough to photograph. This common wildflower is the desert sunflower, Geraea canescens, which during superbloom years covers huge areas with its beautiful blossoms.

Photographed at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley, this seemed to be the only vegetation there. A bush growing to about nine feet, it was also the only thing we found flowering. It is known not only as Chaparral but also as Greasewood or Creosote Bush. It was growing here in sand.

Salal (Gaultheria shallon) is a small evergreen shrub belonging to the Heath family that is very common in the Pacific Northwest. It bears purple berries in autumn that were an important food to the native tribes and are still eaten by many and the leaves have been and are used medicinally.

These pictures are from a brief trip we made earlier in the summer to the Columbia River gorge and to northern Oregon for a bit of sightseeing and hiking.

Though very beautiful in the photo, this plant is a garden escape and a noxious weed that "suppresses native species in west-side forests and is spreading rapidly."

The photo was taken along the Gorge Trail in the area of Horsetail Falls off Old Highway 30, a beautiful scenic drive on the south side of the gorge.

This was photographed near Shepherd's Glen on the Oregon side of the Columbia River gorge and I believe it is Collinsia grandiflora, the Giant Blue-eyed Mary It is larger than its small-flowered cousin, but still a small plant with tiny flowers, less than half an inch.

The pictures I've posted today were taken in the Columbia River Gorge this spring. This, I believe is the Upland Larkspur, Delphinium nuttalianum.
