The West Rim Trail in Zion National Park climbs from the canyon bottom and the Virgin River up the side of the canyon and through a narrow break to Scout's Overlook and Angel's Landing before continuing along the west rim of the canyon. This photo looks back through the break in the canyon wall to the Great White Throne on the east rim of the canyon.

Zion Canyon

This is the view south from the West Rim Trail in Zion Canyon, part of the trail visible on the bottom left. The trail continues up to Scout's Overlook and Angel's Landing. The trail is steep in places but it was very busy. After hiking this trail we hiked the trail to Emerald Pools which was even busier and decided then it was too busy for us and went our way.

In Zion Canyon we hiked the West Rim Trail to Scout's Overlook and Angel's Landing but did not go out to Angel's Landing. The trail is quite steep in places but the view at the end is spectacular. Here the view is north into the canyon.

Our last day in Utah we visited Zion Canyon, the main part of Zion National Park. We hiked two trails, the West Rim Trail to Scout's Overlook, part of the Angel's Landing formation, and the Emerald Pools trail to Lower and Upper Emerald Pools. This view of Angel's Landing looks north up the canyon from the beginning of the West Rim trail. The park was very busy and crowded and after hiking the two trails we went on to a motel in Hurricane, Utah. We will not be visiting that part of the park again. It was nearly impossible to find parking at the visitors' center, the huge shuttle buses were crowded and the trails had far too many people on them.

While in Utah we spent half a day in Zion Canyon, the main area of Zion National Park. We hiked the West Rim trail to Scout's Overlook and the Emerald Pools trail to Upper Emerald Pool. We found that park of the park far too busy for our liking. The shuttle buses are now huge double flex buses and there are traffic jams on the trails. We will not be going back to that part of Zion again and cut the day short, going on to a motel in Hurricane, Utah.

The peak is South Guardian Angel photographed from the Northgate Peaks trail in Zion National Park. We hiked the trail, a total of five miles, from the Kolob Terrace Road.

On the second day of our recent trip we hiked the Northgate Peaks trail to an overlook, a total of about five miles. The peaks, from left to right, are Greatheart Mesa, South Guardian Angel and North Guardian Angel.
Our Itinerary up to that point was:
Monday (day 1) - drive to Cedar City, Utah
Tuesday (day 2) - hike the La Verkin Creek and Kolob Arch trails - 15 miles
Wednesday (day 3 - hike the Timber Creek Overlook and Northgate Peaks trails (7 miles)

This is another photo from our hike in the Kolob Canyons area of Zion National Park. The peak is Shuntavi Butte with Timber Top Mountain behind it. We started our two week trip here and were in three states, Utah, Nevada and Arizona. We visited different areas of Zion National Park, Peek-a-boo Canyon, Valley of Fire State Park, Grand Canyon National Park and Lower Antelope Canyon. We hiked a total of 80 miles (129 km), did three days backpacking in the Grand Canyon and had a wonderful time.

La Verkin Creek runs through the Kolob Canyons area of Zion National Park. Our first day's hike in Zion took us along the creek for several miles of the fifteen miles we hiked that day.

I am back after a very long absence, mostly due to personal matters. The photo is from a recent hiking and backpacking trip to Utah, Nevada and Arizona with our oldest daughter. My wife and I left Washington and drove to Cedar City, Utah, which was our base while exploring the Kolob Canyons area of Zion National Park. That part of the park has few visitors and some great hiking.

The first day we hiked the Kolob Canyon and La Verkin Creek trails to Kolob Arch, a total of 15 miles (24 kilometers) with about 1000 feet (308 meters) of elevation each way. The hike was beautiful but a bit too much for my wife who was not in as good shape as I. The peak is Shuntavi Butte and the hike took us around it and after dropping into the canyon, too us along La Verkin Creek.

On a recent trip to Utah, Nevada and Arizona, we went first to the Kolob Canyons area of Zion National Park, a little-visited part of the park. The first day we hiked to Kolob Arch and the photo was taken at the beginning of the hike early in the morning. The pointed peak is Shuntavi Butte and the mountain behind it Timber Top.

Our second day in Zion last spring we had car trouble and when that was sorted we changed our plans, drove out of the main area of the park and explored the Kolob Reservoir Road, a much quieter area of the park, but closed further in at that time due to snow. This is Tabernacle Dome, one of the features of the road.
