Photo was taken from the Tower of Kavala Fortress
The city was founded in the 6th century BC by people from the island of Thasos, who gave it the name Neapolis («New City» in ancient Greek). The city prospered due to its location near the gold and silver-rich Pangean mines. In 168 BC it was conquered by Rome and became part of the Roman province of Macedonia.

The port of Kavala was for a long time the most important port in the northern Aegean after Thessaloniki. Greek tobacco grown in the prefectures of Xanthi, Drama, Sera and Kavala was exported through Kavala.

The Kamares Aqueduct is a three-tiered arched structure connecting the old and new quarters. It is a Byzantine monument, rebuilt in the 16th century by Sultan Suleiman I. The height of the aqueduct is 25 meters, the length is 280 meters, a total of 60 arches have been preserved. Kamares is located in the center of Kavala, on Nikosara Square, next to the Panagia area, the old market and the old city docks. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the aqueduct provided the city with water flowing from the springs of Mount Pangaea. In 1997, the structure was restored.
