Spring Gold is one of the earliest wildflowers to bloom in western Washington. These were photographed on Pass Island in Deception Pass the first week in March. We had gone wildflower hunting there while on the west side of the Cascades.

When I hiked the Chain Lakes trail near Mount Baker with one of my sons the early wildflowers were starting to open including these Glacier Lilies.

Photographed along the Baker Lake trail in western Washington, these are the flowers of Bunchberry, a common plant in the Pacific Northwest and a relative, only a few inches tall of the flowering dogwood trees that are often grown as ornamentals. It has red berries later in the year that are edible.

Bunchberry is a relative of the flowering dogwood trees many of us are acquainted with but is a plant only a few inches tall, the smallest in that family.

This is a plant without chlorophyll and without leaves that is quite common in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. For obvious reasons it is known as Candystick or Sugarstick. These were photographed along the Thunder Creek trail while hiking there with our oldest daughter.

Monotropa hypopithys is a saprophyte. It has no chlorophyll and lives off the roots of other plants.
