Long's Peak is in the northern Colorado Rockies in Rocky Mountain National Park. At 14,256 feet, (4346 m) it is the highest peak in the park and is recognizable by the notch on its south side. Many years ago (1979) I climbed the peak with a friend (the second PIP is from that climb), the only Colorado fourteener I've climbed.

Lily Lake and Long's Peak

Lily Lake is in Rocky Mountain National Park south of the town of Estes Park, Long's Peak, the highest peak in the park at over 14,000 feet, is west of the lake. Long's Peak is the peak with the notch on the left side. Mount Meeker lies to its south.

My wife and I were in C0olorado for a few days in October and went up into the Rockies one of those days for some sightseeing and a drive. Following Highway 7 south we visited St. Catherine's Chapel on the Rock, a Roman Catholic chapel, open to visitors. We had failed to get into Rocky Mountain National Park since they now have a system of timed entries, and a drive south was the only alternative we could think of.

We will be away for a couple of weeks and posting will be sporadic or non-existent. We are driving to Michigan to see my 93 year old father and other family members and then are driving to Colorado for a long weekend and some hiking.

The photo was taken taken at Diamond Lake in the Colorado Rockies over a year ago. Diamond Lake is in the Indian Peaks are of te Rockies where I was hiking with a cousin and is son. I did not have my camera, so took this with my phone.

This picture is not enhanced in any way. It was underexposed because the sun off the aspens was so bright, but has not been touched - it is as it came from the camera. This was taken with a Minolta SR-T 201 film camera with a 55mm Minolta lens on Kodachrome 64 slide film and scanned with a Konica-Minolta Dual 4 slide scanner.

This was taken on the Chasm Lake trail. On another hike we went around the backside of Long's Peak and went to the top - around 14,300 feet.

Taken on a trip east as we were landing in Denver early in the morning. Was intrigued by the patterns and colors and this was the best of my shots. There was just a dusting of snow and that tended to outline all the features of the ground while the early morning shadows increased the contrasts.

These Colorado Mountains are known as the Maroon Bells for their rich colors. They are west of Aspen, Colorado, and are the mountains in which we backpacked for four days this past week. This photo was taken from our second campsite in the meadows southwest of Trailrider Pass and near sunset.

I am home again after a week of backpacking in Colorado. I arrived home last night tired but feeling very good about the adventure. My worries about the altitude and the distance proved groundless. The company was great (two of my younger brothers), the wildflowers and scenery were spectacular and the hiking itself went very well, though it is also good to be back home.

We were on the trail early Monday morning and hiked out again late Thursday afternoon. We hiked 30 miles (49 km) and climbed about 6000 feet in elevation (1828 m) over all. We did not do the Four Passes Loop as we had intended but cut about 10 miles off that and did a different loop that took us over five passes instead of four, this pass twice and three others.

The two photos I've posted sum up the hike in terms of scenery. This is Snowmass Lake from Trailrider Pass, the first of the five passes, taken on a day that was partly sunny and partly cloudy and stormy, the kind of weather we had every day. The other photo was taken later the same day on the other side of the pass and shows why these mountains are called the Maroon Bells.

The first day we hiked up the Snowmass Creek drainage to Snowmass Lake, the lake shown in this photo. The second day, the day this photo was taken, we hiked from the lake up and over Trailrider Pass to the meadows on the other other side of the pass and camped there. That was our shortest day of hiking but also took us over the most difficult of the five passes.

The third day we hiked back over Trailrider to Snowmass Lake and then up again to Buckskin Pass and down to the meadows on the other side of the pass where we camped the night. The fourth day we hiked over Willow Pass and East Snowmass Pass and down the valley to the East Snowmass trailhead where we finished our hiking.

The five passes we traversed are all over 12000 feet (3658 m). Trailrider Pass is 12415 feet in elevation (3784 m), Buckskin Pass 12462 feet (3798 m), Willow Pass 12570 feet (3831 m) and East Snowmass Pass 12680 feet (3865 m). Independence Pass

When I went hiking in the Colorado Rockies last September with two of my brothers we drove from Denver, where they picked me up at the airport, to Aspen, near our destination along Highway 82 and through Independence Pass. The day was overcast and not the best for photos but we had a nice time catching up with each other.

Last September I went hiking with two of my brothers in the Colorado Rockies near Aspen. They drove out from Michigan, picked me up at the airport in Denver and we drove to a campground south of Aspen where we stayed for a couple of days before hiking. On the way to Aspen we drove Highway 82 through Independence Pass, stopping a number of times for photos. It was not the nicest of days with heavy clouds obscuring most of the peaks, but we had a nice drive and time to catch up with each other.

Devil's Punchbowl

Coming down out of Independence Pass in the Colorado Rockies, we stopped briefly at Devil's Punchbowl on the Roaring Fork River. We did not stay long, since there were a number of drunken teenagers there who were jumping off the rocks into the river below in spite of warning signs.
