We have had an exceptionally hard winter for our area with a lot of cold weather, snow and frost. The ground has been snow-covered since late November and we've had quite a bit more snow the last couple of weeks. In December when this photo was taken we went through a period of freezing fog when everything was covered with hoarfrost and rime.

This is the Western Dwarf Mistletoe, a native parasitic plant that has Ponderosa Pine as its host. The photo was taken on a frosty morning on one of our daily walks near our home.

Western Dwarf Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that has Ponderosa Pine as its host. It is very common in the areas where we take our daily walks because the trees grow so closely together allowing the mistletoe to spread.

This is the Western Dwarf Mistletoe on a Ponderosa Pine. The plant is a common parasite of Ponderosas in our area and this frosted example was taken on a winter morning on one of our daily walks.

Snowberries and Frost

Today's theme is Snowberries, photos of these berries taken at different times as winter closed in, this with frost on the berries. The Snowberry Bush is native to our area and to a large part of the United States and Canada. As far as I could find it is called "Snowberry" for the color of its berries, but could just as well be called that for the fact that its berries persist through the winter.

Taken on a walk with my wife in the City Park near us on a frosty morning. The botanical name for this shrub is Symphoricarpos albus, and it is native to our area and to much of the northern United States and Canada. The berries persist long after the leaves are fallen and stand out on dull gray day.

After leaving Big Bend National Park we drove to the Texas-New Mexico border intending to hike in the Guadalupe Mountains, but when we arrived there the weather was so lousy that we decided instead to go to Carlsbad Caverns and spend the day exploring the cave where at least we would be under cover. Driving up to the visitors' center, which is over a mile in elevation (1700 m) it was raining and just cold enough that there was a covering of ice on everything including the cacti. We stopped and took a few photos in the rain and then made a dash for the caves. This Cholla cactus was one of the things we photographed since it seemed very odd to see cacti covered in ice.

These grasses covered in ice were photographed near the visitors' center in Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico. We had intended to hike in the Guadalupe Mountains the day this was taken but ended up exploring the caverns instead since the weather was so poor.

When we hiked a few weeks ago at Hog Lake there was a dusting on snow on everything early in the morning. This dried out flower head had captured a few bits of it.

Last January about this time we had an ice storm that left many opportunities for photos such as these. This year it has been much warmer and we've had much less snow. I enjoyed photographing the ice but am not complaining about a milder winter.
