Railway tunnel vents in the car park at Merton Street, Huddersfield. These serve the Manchester and Penistone lines feeding into Huddersfield station from the west.

Rugeley 'B' power station was still generating for a few more weeks when I took this, but was finally switched off on June 9th, 2016. It was commissioned in 1970 and could generate around 1000 megawatts of electricity.

The passing Pendelino is the icing on the cake.

A few Furness Railway water tanks have survived along the Cumbrian Coast line. This one is alongside the crossing at Foxfield Station.

156 414 departs St Bees with a service to Corkickle. The line is currently severed at Corkickle tunnel due to collapse of mineworkings under the line in the tunnel.

Called at Haverthwaite whilst on the way to Barrow and found 46441 ready to depart with an early afternoon train to Lakeside. This line likes to paint its locos in maroon but I think that many of them looked better in black.

Peckett 1632/1923 'Liassic' and Corpet 439/1884 at the 2025 Statfold Barn spring steam gale. The latter locomotive was used at a mine in Spain and is Statfold's oldest working narrow gauge locomotive.

Hudswell Clarke 1884 was built in 1955 to a design used for the supply of locomotives to the Port of London Authority. It went to the National Coal Board and worked at Newmarket Colliery, Near Wakefield. Here it carried the number S102 and worked alongside S103 (Hudswell Clarke Work Number 1864) which was built to the same design.

It worked at the Colliery until 1969 and then following repairs at the central workshops (NCB Allerton Bywater). From there it moved to St Johns Colliery in Wakefield and worked there and at Park Hill Colliery in Wakefield. It was taken out of service in March 1977.

It is now based on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway where it is was restored to service in 2021. As of July 2023 the locomotive was at Peak Rail where it was photographed in the shed. It was due to stay at Peak Rail for two years.

New Year sunshine as Neilson 2937 leaves Brownhills West station on the Chasewater Railway. The locomotive was built in 1882 and delivered to William Baird & Co at Bedlay Colliery near Glenboig, where it was given the No 11. It returned to service at Chasewater in 2025 after extensive restoration.

The ballast hoppers in the charge of pannier tank 9681 are just south of Tufts Junction as the train heads for Whitecroft and Parkend on the Dean Forest Railway.

Canadian style pacific locomotive 'Winston Churchill' was completed for the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway by the Yorkshire Engine Company (2294) in 1931. It is seen here awaiting departure from Hythe with a train to Dungeness. During the journey a slight rain shower caused the locomotive to slip repeatedly and the driver did well to keep the train moving.

The Volk's Electric Railway at Brighton is the oldest working electric railway in the world. It has been in service since 1883. It runs for one and a quarter miles along the top of the beach from the Aquarium Station near Brighton Pier to the Marina.

North Midland Railway

Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust has restored the old station building at Wingfield on the route of the North Midland Railway which opened a line from Derby to Leeds in 1840. As part of the interpretation of the station and surroundings the Trust raised £8,000 through a crowd funding appeal to save the stone crest with the coat of arms of the railway that once adorned the main entrance to the original Derby Railway Station, and relocate it to Wingfield Station where it can now be seen at the back of the car park.
