In the case of southbound trains at Heald Green, there is usually a few seconds audible warning before the train appears from under the bridge at the north end of the station. On this occasion, an aircraft passing overhead at low level, taking off from Manchester Airport, plus the fact it was running a few minutes early, ensured that I missed the shot, and had to make do with this going away shot into the sun.

DBS 66085 powers through Heald Green with 4L56 1317 Manchester Trafford Park to London Gateway, near Thurrock in Essex.
As it passed through the station I noticed clouds of smoke pouring from the brakes of one of the wagons at the rear of the train. I mentioned this to the lady in the booking office, who later told me that the train was halted just up the line at Wilmslow. This resulted in the 3 other freight trains and one light engine I'd gone out to photograph were diverted via an alternative route.
Checking the times later, I discovered that the train was sat at Wilmslow for about 70 minutes, and eventually arrived at its destination over 2 hours late.

Despite what it says on the tin, this is a Freightliner machine. 66415 yings away at Warrington Arpley Yard whilst awaiting clearance to enter Walton Old Jn MSC (Manchester Ship Canal) Sidings, where it will run round its train then head north , with 4C22 1003 empties from Fiddlers Ferry Power Station - Carlisle Yard.

Freightliner 66546 is using every one of its 3300 horses as it claws its way past Kirkby Stephen and up the last few miles to the summit at Ais Gill, on the Settle & Carlisle Line, with 6Z68 coal loads from Killoch to Drax Power Station.
