Roof tile of the Sixth Legion which replaced the Ninth Legion at York around AD 122. Excavated in 1997.

Roof tile of the Ninth Hispania Legion. This legion is last recorded in Britain in AD 108 in an inscription over one Of the York fortress gates. Records of it disappear altogether by AD 200. What happened to the Ninth isn't known but it probably transferred to the Netherlands before being disbanded or destroyed fighting in the eastern empire.

Culvert, built in the 1st or 2nd century, which still drains water from this area. The water drains into the River Ouse, following a gradual slope downwards.

He was proclaimed Roman Emperor at Eboracum (York) in 306 AD. This is most likely to have taken place at or near the Roman headquarters building, the ruins of which can still be seen under York Minster (in the Undercroft). This statue is situated just outside the Minster.

Multi-Angular Tower

The multi-angular Tower is so-named after its 10 sides. It stood at the south-western corner of the Roman legionary fortress and is the only surviving one of eight similar towers. The distinctive bands of terracotta tiles which were used to decorate the walls can still be seen. The top 3 metres of stone including arrow slits were added during the 13th century.
